Football question

Also, if any of you follow Kegan Reneau on X/Twitter, he does a really good job of actually breaking down the games. I think he showed that Mateer missed a lot of open stuff Saturday and we actually had a lot of opportunities to punish Texas had he been mentally sharp.
I’ve heard that from multiple sources. In some ways that alleviates the worry about the system in general. BUT, if Mateer was that bad they should have put in Hawkins. You know, the guy that actually practiced the weeks leading up to the game. Maybe he connects on some of those. Just bad coaching any way you look at it.

I’m sure he’s sick of DM and the clueless rotations
or he would like to maximize his earnings .. when the NFL doesn't look like it is really his future .. and UNLV (or where ever) is a nice 6 figure paycheck next season .

that is what college sports now is

Sexton, Howland, Taylor, and Simmons were supposed to be our 2 deep at OT. They’re all out. Now, I don’t think we should’ve been counting on Taylor but the rest were supposed to be “healthy”. Fasusi is still nursing an ankle and baklenko was an emergency depth piece that’s played decent. I know Wichita refuses to believe in injuries but if you don’t think that makes a difference, you’re being willfully obtuse.

Sexton and Taylor -- may as well be Trent Williams and Lane Johnson lol.

They are just average at best. We have seen enough of them to know that. And it's wild to suggest Fasusi wouldn't have made the two-deep. And the ankle is, you guessed it, an excuse. He played against Kent freaking State. They held out two defensive starters that game because they didn't want to risk playing guys who weren't healthy. The fact that we played Fasusi against the worst team in the country says all you need to know about how that ankle is.

You know who was missing two starting lineman Saturday? USC. Shoved it down Michigan's throat.

Missing 2 lineman? I just listed 4 OT that were supposed to play 75-80% of snaps this year…gone. I also forgot to mention everett at center. You’re just willingly obtuse because you hate Brent and you’re overly critical of all things OU in football and basketball. Why are you here if you can’t stand anything OU?

So we were going to have four tackles on the field? Interesting. Also, you’re just wrong. Go back to Michigan week. Every person who covers the team was saying, this is our group: these are the five guys we want to have starting. That’s the same group who started against Kent St and Texas. And Everett lost his job before he got hurt.

I’m here to bug you and make you feel better about yourself since you think you’re a superior fan. You and Coach and the like can pat each other on the back for being the kind of fans who won’t see reality and accept when a coach does a crappy job. Commence circle jerk.

Offense is a problem....and it's both scheme and personnel. Mateer, when he is "on", can mask a lot of those deficiencies. However, when your line isn't physical and you have absolutely no difference-makers at the skill positions, then your ceiling is going to be very limited against this schedule. Stop asking our TEs to block DEs because they can't.....for various reasons. If you're going to try and run, your best chance is probably out of 10 personnel (4 WRs, 0 TEs)....and maybe Blaylock can find a seam or get outside on occasion. Other than that, they are just going to have to use the short pass as an extension of the running game.

DM and JJF need to be sent packing. I'm going to wait and see with BB, but if we don't show significant improvement by game 12, we need to move in another direction there as well.

Gabe absolutely trashed the offensive scheme on Sunday’s show.

Yes, several people separately broke down plays showing the scheme was good. Several passing plays that should have been touchdowns if Mateer makes the right read. Mateer just looked lost...almost as if he missed 3 weeks of practice.

As a Sooner, Gabe is frustrated and vented. Wichita is just plagiarizing the pod and pretending he understands what he watched. There literally isn't a coherent thought he's produced that didn't come directly from the negative parts of Gabe's rant.

But Gabe and Teddy also have said a ton of positive things about this team, which conveniently get left off. I wouldn't be shocked to later find out he just plugged Gabe's pod into chatgpt and requested it to respond as negatively as possible to everybody's posts.

Jeez man, it’s crazy how obsessed with me you are. I can’t stand Gabe. Like most of the OU fan boy media, he is a homer who refuses to call out Bonehead Brent. I only referred to him today because when a guy who is that big a homer criticizes the team and some of the coaches, it’s telling.

But also, those of you who believe the folks who look at screenshots and claim the scheme is good are delusional. Many of you are the same people who have been acting like Mateer is a Heisman front runner and likely high draft pick. Now the theory is that he was the one holding the offense back? That’s rich. Mateer sucked Saturday. So did our running game. So did our offensive line. We also had a couple drops, the allegedly dynamic Burks made a terrible read on the running play, and he and Mateer weren’t on the same page on the second pick. And let’s not forget the abortion that was the final drive of the half. I suppose you’ll argue that was also good coaching, to let the clock bleed instead of being aggressive? If you’ll notice, I pointed out many of these things during the game, long before that pod was recorded.

Again, if you want to praise the coaching, knock yourself out. This is allegedly Bonehead’s best team. Texas hadn’t played a decent game all season. Their line sucks, we have a massive edge in experience at the most important position on the field, and they also are starting four new lineman. All that, and they whipped us up and down the field in the second half, in all three phases. But sure, this game was just about Mateer playing poorly. I’m guessing we would have put up, what, 60 if he just played a decent game?

Also, I’d be curious to hear you cite any positive things they have said about our offense, other than that they like Blaylock’s effort and Mateer’s attitude. They certainly think our WRs and backs have been disappointing and that our line has been a disaster in the run game, and they said we have the worst tight end room in the conference. They have complimented the defense, which is appropriate, although I thought they were too easy on them this week. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how the defense was tired, but the drive that changed the game and led to the only Texas offensive TD was the first drive of the second half. When that drive started, our defense hadn’t been on the field for 30 minutes of real time, and it’s not like they were on the field a ton in the first half. Sadly, because our offensive probably wouldn’t have scored if we played 8 more quarters, the defense couldn’t afford to have even one possession that bad. And going forward, if we have two or three critical missed tackles per game and struggle on third down, it will result in more losses because the offense isn’t good.

Man I just don't buy the "he didn't play for 3 weeks and was rusty" . I get it for being a little off on some throws but not for missing reads.
He has been in this system for 3 years now and having a hurt hand shouldn't effect your reads.

Anything negative he says, you almost immediately come here and post it, pretending that it's your analysis. This is obvious to anybody who listens.
Again, read my comments during games. I say almost all of this stuff in real time. I’ve been talking about Brent’s horrible game management for four years. Gabe rarely if ever discusses that. I’ve complained about the lack of talent offensively for years, whereas Gabe spends eight months each year talking about how many playmakers we have. I’ve said for four years how stupid I think his soul mission and off field culture crap is, and Gabe loves that garbage. The fact that he comes on the pod a handful of times each year after a game and makes the same observations that anyone with eyes can see regarding scheme and game planning in no way means I am copying him. I know your mind may be too simple to process this, but it’s possible for two people to independently come to the same conclusion on topics without one “copying” the other.

Man this is a wild take. We have pretty high retention in large part because of the culture.
It is the one thing brent does exceptionally well.

Do you think the soul mission and culture comes at an expense of results on the field? If so, how?
