Football question

I'm hoping Mateer looks much better this weekend. If we can win against SC this weekend i'll still have some hope that we may be okay. If we can't beat them, the rest of the season could end as badly as it did last season, which would be a shame, and would probably be the end of BV. Great guy but just might not be the best head coach and is in over his head, sadly.

Honest question....if this season ends badly, what are the odds that BV would resign into the DC role?
He obviously loves OU. He never seemed like a guy that wanted to be a HC. And add in his wife's health, etc

It would be unprecedented but I could see it actually happen.

My guess: zero. Pride and tens of millions of dollars. Plus, if he and the school agree his time as a HC has been a failure and it's time to bring in someone else, it would be a nightmare for the new coach, and a mess for the entire program, to have him still in the mix.

I don't think it is likely but if there is anyone that would do it, I'd say it would be BV

yeah i think a loss against sc is going to be the nail in a lot of coffins...
going to get ugly down the stretch.
heck even if we win....it might be the last one.
i'm concerned with the defense. as long as they play hard.....we have a chance..
but i'm afraid there's a fine line between having something to play for....and the defensive side of the ball not caring....

Last year, I felt like the defense never gave up. Which was impressive. But, two years in a row of this crap could make a lot of dudes quit.

We are dooming this bad off the Texas game?

We’ll see how it ends before I go there

the offense is not good....and when mateer plays poorly it's absolutely pathetic
gabe says we have the worst tight ends in the conference and we shouldn't even play them...
he said the o-line gets absolutely no push in the run game...
so yeah...if the offense lays another egg at sc....and we end up with a loss....how do u think the next 5 games go?

This Saturday is a huge game. The sense of dread around Norman is palpable. If we can't go on the road and get it done.......gulp.
The fact that it was SC against whom we laid the gigantic egg at Owen Field probably doesn't help matters either.

I understand our warts but just don’t see it that bad yet.

Of course our best player has to be better.

I usually hate the phrase “must win” because very few games are actually must win. But … going back five days ago, the only two remaining unrankred opponents on the schedule were Texas and S. Carolina. One of those teams just embarrassed us on a neutral field. S. Carolina has been truly awful offensively. If we lose this game, I expect the wheels to come completely off. I’d guess in that scenario, 6-6 or 7-5 would be the most likely outcome, and Brent will hopefully be out the door at year’s end.

I’ve all but given up on the offense being any good this season. I feel like their ceiling is to be thoroughly mediocre. But I think we will learn a lot about the defense the next couple weeks. I know Sellers is talented, but they have been anemic offensively in every category. If we have one of our “the defense played really well … except for the three or four big plays where we missed tackles and it cost us” games, it’ll be a really bad sign. Auburn and Texas both exploited us in certain areas. I’ve said this a lot, but if our defense wants to be elite, it can’t give up those big plays or miss routine tackles in critical situations to extend drives.

Brent has sucked in these games. I know we won at Auburn last year, but he has been awful on the road. I can’t even think of what his best road win is. If he wants to keep his job, he needs to figure it out. And they better show some sort of change in their offensive approach. Half a season is more than enough time to realize that it’s not working.

it isn't that bad ...yet. until we lose to sc. then it likely snowballs downhill.
so yeah...mateer must be better to get a w saturday. the pressure is on him....and the offense.

Yep. And Mateer isn’t even close to being our best player. He plays the most important and highest profile position, but he isn’t even in the conversation for best player on the team.

he has to be the best player on offense or we have zero chance in 5 of the next 6 games...and a slim chance in the 6th.

On offense, yes, but that wasn’t what Coach said. He needs to be our best offensive player almost by default.

I saw Kiper released his midseason big board. Listed the top 5 to 10 players at every position, offense and defense. Not a single OU guy made the cut. Thomas was in the “just missed the cut” category. I said before the season that the drop off in talent under Brent was severe, and that the OU media and fans were drastically overhyping how many “dogs” we had. People pushed back, but this is shaping up to be four straight years where we aren’t close to putting as many players in the NFL as we did under Riley and Stoops. Settle for enough 3 stars, and this is what happens.

Less than 0%

I didn’t know this but apparently SC’s offensive might actually be the worst in the SEC. No excuses for the defense.

Oh they are. Their offense has been atrocious. Not sure if it’s mainly their line or skill guys, though likely both in order to be that bad across the board when you have a really talented quarterback.

Yeah, this is definitely a must win. It could all unravel if we lose this game. Gotta have this one.
