Football question

Ok. This board can be hilarious. We scored on a play that the entire country was talking about a month ago and most people here wouldn’t just admit we got a break. But today the refs were crooked.

Every fan base in the country whines about the refs. EVERY SINGLE ONE. I'll never forget the Oklahoma vs. Purdue basketball game in NYC early in Blake's sophomore year back in 2008. The game went to OT (we won), but Purdue wound up with 30-something fouls called against them vs about 15 for us. And guess what? Yes, our fans were still complaining about the refs. The fact that OU had 8 penalties called against them in the first half vs ZERO for the home team is going to get our fanbase to bitch & moan. I'm at a loss why that would bother any OU fan. Let them vent. No one needs to respond to every post they disagree with.

he needed to get to the 15 .....his left foot stepped out at the 15....the ball was in his right hand....
it wasn't physically possible for him to get the first down.
the targeting call wasn't even close....there wasn't even any helmet to helmet contact..
the refs were crooked from start to finish.
i thought he made the first down live .. BUT there was no camera view to overturn the call that had him spotted short ..

My feelings about the game have been pretty much covered by others in the thread, both positively and negatively. I did think the last play of the 1st Q and the SC TD gamecocks were clearly in motion.....I groused about that over the half. Proud of our guys to put that behind em, and do what it took to get the W. and the 1st half run game success I did not see coming. LOL.

Whatever else happens I think this season is the first time I've seen the opposing team attempt a post-safety free kick with onside/poochy intentions.....and it's happened twice. Auburn and yesterday. I may have seen that before and don't recall it but twice already! I started going to Owen Field with my dad in 1975...so, I got some years in. Do teams practice that scenario.....again, LOL.

edit: and attaboys to Sandell for the 55 yarder, makes a 2 score game and X Robinson for turning the bad exchange into 6 points.

Because I got all kinds of heat for simply pointing out that they missed a call in the Auburn game, and some of the same people slamming me and defending the refs in that one are now the ones complaining the loudest about a much more subjective and difficult call regarding the first down. But also, I’d say it’s one thing to complain about a specific call. It’s another to argue that the refs had it in for us yesterday and are the only reason S. Carolina scored.

There's absolutely nothing to complain about today.
I'll take the bait!

I worry about the ball skills of our back end if the pass rush doesn't get home. I heard Boganowski's name three times yesterday and each instance was VERY bad. If a team is able to withstand the siege up front, I'm afraid it's going to be PI-City for those guys.

A lot of offensive penalties. Our first TD yesterday was sprung by an obvious hold that didn't get called. We must continue to do a better job of playing complementary football. In the fourth quarter, when we should be salting the game away by milking the clock with the run game, we ran 12 plays for five yards.

Good win. Very happy. Onward !!

I don’t think Mateer is 100% either. Maybe it’s the thumb or mental or another injury. OU is gonna have to throw the ball downfield to beat the rest of the schedule. I don’t think the staff trusts him at the moment to do that.

It was a good SEC road win. There are things we still have to get much better. Like everyone, I saw improvement in the run game, but there is still a long way to go there.....but at least it was really good for a half or so. Regarding penalties, I can live with a few holds because it's going to happen every game. But the dumbass penalties after the whistle or hitting someone out of bounds drive me stark raving mad. Tate Sandell is nails.

As for our secondary, we are going to find out how good (or bad) they are this Saturday. Ole Miss slings it all over the yard. If we don't get constant pressure on Chambliss, then it could turn out to be a tough day. Kiffen is a gifted scheme designer and play caller, but I'm just hoping they have a bit of a hangover due to their loss to UGA yesterday. On defense, Ole Miss is pretty average....probably a little worse than South Carolina according to the metrics. Barring mistakes, we should be able to points some points on the board.

I was hoping the Rebs would win yesterday and maybe have a bit of a letdown next week, but I hope you’re right in thinking they may have a bit of a hangover.

Their offense will be by far the best test for our defense. The three conference teams we have played all have really struggled offensively, and Michigan is inconsistent at best with their freshman QB and has a very conservative plan against us. We will go from not playing any good offenses to playing two straight great ones. Great challenge. And we get the first one at home, with a fully heathy defense. Let’s do it.

Nope I’m popping bottles that we are bowl eligible! Your post was great comedy so I do appreciate it.

For the non-trolls who actually want to discuss the game — obviously the defense was great. Did exactly what you’d hope to see against that offense. Sellers avoided a few sacks but it didn’t lead to any big plays. Was frustrating to see the penalties and lack of discipline hurt us on their one scoring drive.

Offensively, I’m not sure why we got away from Blaylock for a long stretch after he had so much success. Weird day in the pass game. We converted some third downs through the air and the TD was a nice throw, but the overall numbers were meh. Still wish we would throw downfield more but I guess we didn’t need to today.

Now the real “fun” starts. Going to need to play close to our A game the rest of the way.
I agree with most of this.
I think the most logical reason why we aren't throwing it down field is JM's hand still.
It was good to see J. Gibson get in a rhythm

Maybe the Big 12 ref conspiracy is still going.

It couldn’t have been clearer he had the first down. We had multiple defenders within feet of him and not a single one of them reacted as if they thought he was short. Defenders usually jump around and celebrate if it’s even debatable. His last step inbounds was almost a yard past the 15.

High comedy that a month after we scored on a clearly illegal play that you’re going to say “the only reason they scored” was the replay making the correct call on a judgment call.
There were some missed calls on their touchdown (false start and hold) but the real reason they scored was the terrible punt and personal fouls.

And for those complaining about our punter, he's been really great. Chalk it up as an anamoly. But punt coverage has not been great this year

There was a lot to like from today's game - especially dominating on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Mateer was better today, but at some point he is going to need to throw the ball down the field. These never-ending short passes will bite us just like the poor offensive line / running game bit us last week. I loved the oline blocking today, at least in the first half. Blaylock and Robinson should be an effective duo down the stretch. Defensively, my only complaint was the several missed tackles...but loved both the pass rush and the WR coverage.

Would someone make sense of S Beamer's decision to go for it in the 1st quarter with a 4th down at the 6 yard line? You don't need hindsight to conclude that was an awful decision. Take the easy three so your offense doesn't feel deflated coming up empty after a long drive.
Beamer is and has always been a goober. I didn't understand our fans infatuation with him when he was here

not an advanced stat .. but stop rate is a good stat ...

TeamGamesStop RatePts/Drive
1. Ohio State684.2%0.72
2. Oklahoma682.1%0.84
3. Texas781.7%0.94

What is stop rate? It's a basic measurement of success: the percentage of a defense's drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs. Defensive coordinators have the same goal regardless of their scheme, opponent or conference: prevent points and get off the field. Stop rate is a simple metric but can offer a good reflection of a defense's effectiveness on a per-drive basis in today's faster-tempo game.

OU has played the number 3, 17, 34, 63, 74, & 126 teams
Remaining (in schedule order): 65, 91, 16, 22, 10

Need continue to get the run game and offense going over the next 2 weeks to get confidence for those last 3 games
lol what?

Hopefully Mateer continues to heal because the offense has a chance to score against Ole Miss. I think they can win with four tds

That's a good question/subject -- I'm not sure how many points we need to win this one. Ole Miss is such a step up offensively from anyone we have seen. And now their QB has a road SEC test under his belt, and he was fantastic for three quarters Saturday. Our D against their offense is a really good battle. I suspect it will come down to whether our DBs can hold up.
