Football question

I can’t remember off the top of my head the last time we went undefeated at home since it seems like we always dropped a ridiculous home game even in our best years.
Undefeated at home in both 2018 and 2019 if memory serves. Regular season losses to Texas in 18 and K-State in Manhattan in 19.

With the expanded playoff, I think we will be in the playoffs at 9-3 with our schedule. We have to win one of the next 3 to have a chance. Win 2 of 3 and we’re in really good position. Of course, we could easily go 0-3 too! Let’s not do that.
the issue would be that 9-3 with a loss to Tennessee would put OU behind them if they are 9-3 (which i think they will be) ..

the only path to 9-3 and playoff IMHO is win at tenn and lose at home to lsu ..

unless there is a bunch of upsets in the last 5 weeks i think 10-2 is needed

I wouldn't be so quick to write off a 9-3 OU team.

I think OU is going to get credit for losing to texas with an injured Mateer. How much and how it compares to a team with the same record that beat us? I don't know. But a team that loses to texas with an injured QB, and on the road at Tennessee and Bama (assuming we don't get blown out), that's a pretty impressive resume. The Michigan game should help as well.

I'm not worried about the Playoffs. We need to finish our season. If we finish 9-3 and get left out for good reason, I'm not going to cry about it. Still a very good rebound season. But a lot of teams in the SEC are going to beat up on each other over the next several weeks.

12 teams make the playoffs.

SEC - 4
Big 10 - 3
ACC - 1
Big 12 - 1
P5 - 1

That is 10. Unfortunately ND is probably going to win out and take a spot. Sad given their schedule. We needed USC to beat them. Big 10 won't get more than 3. ACC could get 2, but I'd hate it. You figure aTm, Bama, and UGA have good paths to the Playoffs. Vandy probably as well, though they have no shot at getting in with 3 losses, and they have some loseable games remaining.

If OU can beat Ole Miss, that should slot us above them, thought they have an easy schedule from here out. Any chance a 9-3 OU team gets in over a 10-2 Ole Miss team that we beat? I dunno. If ever there was a year, having the texas loss with extinuating circumstances and having the Michigan win OOC could help.

ACC and Big 12 really need to be one bid conferences this year though. Those conferences are just not very good. Same with the Big 10 after the top 3 (tOSU, Oregon, and Indiana), but those guys are all just about guaranteed to make it at this point. Schedules are just horrible though. ESPN's SOS rating proves that out.

The CFP said SOS will matter more going forward. I'm curious to see what that looks like in application.

There’s been plenty of bad signs from the offense up to this point in the season. I would not be shocked if OU’s offense struggles. But I also won’t be shocked if OU’s offense moves the ball well.
Way to pick a side. lol

The Ole Miss D is awful. I'm not saying OU will score at will, but we should have some success. Weather could hurt both offenses.

Just never know which OU offense is going to show up! The Michigan offense? Or the Kent St and Texas offense?

Possibly. 10-2 would be a lock. 9-3, I believe, would be 50-50 or 60-40 in the playoff. It depends on other factors but the SEC could get 5 teams in.

0.00% same as a 9-3 OU team getting in over a over a 9-3 Tennessee team that has a win vs OU

Honestly, I don’t think we’ll have to worry about making the playoffs. Simmons has another concussion and he’s probably out for several weeks if not the year. 2nd concussion in a month? He shouldn’t be playing. Howland is still coming off injury. It’s maddening how we can’t keep our OL healthy. Maybe we need to start recruiting 20 OL every year.

He get hurt in practice? Or in the game and they didn't know till after the fact?

Not ideal. But if our ability to make the playoff hinges on a good-but-not-great lineman we got from a low level D-1 school, when our team as a whole is very healthy, then we probably aren't where we need to be as a program, anyway.

I believe it was practice and he failed concussion protocol.

I believe we have made great strides and improvements in the program. Things that needed to change, have changed. We have the structure and leadership in place to win at the highest levels. Brent has completely changed the culture on defense. The offense has had major setbacks since Lebby left. While the offense is much improved, it’s still not where it needs to be. The OL specifically has had issues for several years now. The recruiting issues appear to have been fixed but it takes several years to build an OL and the portal guys we’ve plugged in are not ideal.

I don’t think we’re a playoff team because the offense just isn’t good enough at too many positions. I was in wait and see mode but the OL injuries, No TE, and very few playmakers at WR will be too much to overcome. I still think we’re a good team and moving in the right direction, but we’re not where we need to be yet.

And I know you think we have no OL talent, but I disagree. I think we have some marginal guys that can be good enough to win but they’re hurt. We have a few NFL guys but they’re still green. I do agree that we need to continue to upgrade the talent at OL by any means necessary.

We were never going to be a national title contender this year tho. Not yet. I thought we had an outside chance at the playoffs, and we still do. I just don’t believe in this offense when we don’t know who’s going to be available at OL from week to week.

More OL injuries? Unbelievable. Who is cursed on the offensive staff? Good thing Ole Miss defense is just okay.

The OL is not healthy. Not even close imo. Mateer is not 100%. I think the only OL in the SEC more banged up than OU is South Carolina. “Very healthy” is not a good way to describe the offense.

Now, luckily there are dudes on staff who get paid a lot of money to make it work. So no excuses. But they do have one hand tied behind their back because of injuries.

It’s football. It’s the second half of the season. Find me a team that doesn’t have at least a couple starters and a couple backups dealing with injuries. Some teams might be healthier at one specific position group, but we have had very few injuries to our skill position guys, our TEs are healthy, and the defense has had almost no injuries.

Mateer … we can all debate that forever. Every time he throws a bad pass, some will point to his thumb, even though he threw lots of bad passes the first three games of the season. And we are now four weeks post surgery. The original timeline had four weeks as the conservative timeline. At some point, we have to stop talking about the thumb IMHO.

Mateer had a sprained MCL, I believe as well. It wasn’t thought to be serious but he’s dealing with more than the thumb. The OL injuries are beyond ridiculous but we need to be recruiting and developing better athletes and better players that can stay healthy and perform.

When the technique is sloppy, it leads to reaching and grabbing which can cause more injuries. Better athletes with better technique can reduce the possibility of injury. Too late for this season but something we need to solve going forward.
