Football question

This team is a good QB away from having a serious shot at winning number 9. And that is not hating on anyone. Mateer is bad. The defense is incredible. Just the facts.

Mateer isn't as good as he was made out to be early in the season, but he's not as bad as people are making him out to be after rushing back from injury. With Arnold at QB, we are likely 5-5, and in no scenario would we be better than 6-4. Mateer did what he needed to do with no turnovers on the road against one of the best defenses in the country.

We have room for improvement at nearly every position, with OL somehow becoming our best position group. Bedenbaugh has 9 lives and will survive another season. Satenga is the only skill position player I'd be worried about losing, and even he is below average in the conference as a WR1. My understanding is that Arbuckle loves using multiple TEs, so 1 or 2 portal wins could completely change what this offense looks like next year.

I'm not saying Arbuckle is a star, and have never been confident in that, but this offense has really seemed to grasp what it is this past month. It simply isn't a great unit, but it hasn't needed to be. He hasn't been trying to force it, which is not something we saw with Littrell.

I'm not predicting a championship, and even a playoff berth isn't guaranteed. But I'll take my chances against anybody with extended prep in the first round. Outside of a game in Columbus, there isn’t a harder test we would face in the playoffs than back to back at Rocky Top and Tuscaloosa.

Anything can happen once you get into the playoffs. That said, this team is not winning it all. This season is about establishing our identity and reestablishing our brand. We put some respect back on the brand the last 2 games. Finishing 10-2 and making the playoffs will be a very successful year to build on the way we want and need to build.

I am not conceding anything but our offense is just not good enough. The OL has improved and we finally have the right guys playing and we have some great recruits coming if we can hold onto them. We badly need playmakers at WR and TE. We only have one really good RB and he’s been banged up off and on all season. QB play is uneven. Mateer is who he is and that’s not changing. He’s a tough competitor but an average QB.

We have to invest in the offense the way we invest in the defense or we will never win a title.

Agreed, but basically everybody outside of Ohio State has very low odds of winning it all. For the teams not getting a bye, the odds are likely not above 5% for any team to win 4 straight against the best teams in the country. Even playing each game as 50/50 would put the odds at 3.125%.

These last two games have been playoff caliber matchups on the road. I do not think neutral field games against A&M and Indiana would be any tougher. A first round matchup if we win out would likely be easier.

The coaches do need to find a way to generate some points and yards from the offense. As we see the first 8 games, turnovers aren’t something you can rely on every week, let alone 17 points scored or directly set up by the D. Our offensive skill talent is subpar, but a good plan and scheme should still be able to get you more than what we are getting. Find a way two or three times a game to get someone wide open like most teams do. And at least make the defense think there is a chance you’ll try to thrown downfield. We obviously can’t put together a long drive, so a big play would be grand!

Anybody that considers themselves a big time college football fan should try to go next time OU plays at Bama (2029). They put on one heck of a show. Top notch all the way around from arriving/parking, to tailgating, to the entire stadium experience. I've been to pretty much every big OU home game since 1999. I've been to several OU/texas games. I've been to some of the Big 12 CCG's. The experience at Bama blew me away.

I would love to go to a game at Bama. I've heard about it from others who said exactly what you said.

Great analysis.

Try to generate more points.

Email the staff. I bet they didn’t know that.

I will give you credit -- you somehow manage to appear even dumber with each post. Impressive, considering how low the bar already is.

Keep trying to "bump" the football thread since your boy Moser is crapping the bed so badly with this team. Curious, have you apologized yet to the poster you bashed for questioning whether JN would step right in and be a stud? And how is your source who was predicting weeks ago that Jones would be back any day?

I also asked CoachTalk a question on the basketball thread about OU’s defense and he didn’t respond. But oh golly he’ll respond with something snarky to you.

Edit: and that’s fine. He can respond any way he wants. But it shows he’s not serious about talking OU sports.

Yep. I am certainly wrong about stuff my fair share of the time -- didn't think the football team would win Saturday, and was also skeptical about the Tenn. game. But right or wrong, I try to bring actual analysis and opinions. Coach brings "lol" and makes fun of people when they are wrong on something, then is conveniently too busy to show up when the team plays like crap. Or he will show up with a vague "need to play better defense, glad I don't gamble often."

I agree but they have to be very careful about it. I would rather see them manage clock to the best of their ability like they have been than throw 3 straight incompletions or start forcing the ball. The O line is green and we have to play wisely. Although good, not the greatest receiving corps either. I wish we had a 6’7” TE who caught everything thrown his way. That would open things up for us. But I am overall happy with what we are doing based on what we have.

The offense produced 6 points, at most, of their own accord. Not sure how anyone can be happy with that. I absolutely agree that we should play to our defense -- we shouldn't play fast and take a ton of crazy chances. But if we think we can win consistently by putting up under 300 yards of offense and never scoring without help from the defense or special teams, that is unrealistic. And remember -- even with that vanilla approach, Mateer threw what should have been an easy pick six Saturday. Luck is part of the sport so I won't complain that Bama dropped it, but my point is, you shouldn't get SO conservative on offense that your entire philosophy is, don't screw up, and hope the defense scores.

I am not a football Xs and Os guy, but it does seem like you could at least run a couple deep routes to at least make the defense respect that.

If X isn't healthy, that is a big concern. Blaylock has tailed off, and behind him, I have no idea who we have. Barnes isn't good, but would he consider giving up his redshirt now that there is a lot on the line? Tatum hasn't played all season and would scare me to death if he has to step on the field now. That position could get scary quickly if X can't go or is severely limited.

We are hamstrung by the lack of playmakers on offense. I'd look for Kanak more. Carter can get open, as can Sategna. Need to figure out to mask the running game with short passes. Hard to throw deep when max protect may not keep a rush of five out of the backfield. It's a double-edged sword. One thing's for certain: we NEVER need to hurry. Milk that clock. Complementary football from here on out.

And use the IGNORE list, people! It has made my posting experience here much more enjoyable.

Must’ve missed it. Bump it and I’ll respond.

I called out the crappy defense myself if you saw that
