Football question

Tell us who you would go get... realistic choice. Names. Portal is yours to pick. Who you taking?

You keep Mateer and bring in a young guy to groom and step in if we don't see improvement. Likely Bentley but could keep an eye out for talented freshman wanting a reset and willing to fight for a spot/start on the bench.

No one expects an explosive offense. Some of us do expect competence. Something outlandish, say, over 300 yards of offense. And if that means the coaches swallowing their pride and playing guys they don’t like rather than playing the entire game without a healthy running back, so be it.
ott is not playing not because the coaches don't like .him .. but because his effort and blocking are terrible ..

How'd that work out running Gabriel out of town?

OU doesn't need to be the kind of program that is experiencing constant turnover at the HC, assistant coach, or player levels. We don't have the resources to overcome that and maintain a consistent program.

I'm not saying NO turnover, but folks wanted to replace all of the offensive assistants last year, knowing BV could have been fired this year as well. They want to run off a QB that has played most of the season with a significant injury. They also want to replace several assistant coaches this year, while now, what, running off Mateer, possibly still having to pay him for next season (we don't know what that contract looks like), replace him with somebody definitively better (how much will that cost with all of these new HC's looking for QB's?), and maintaining the defense we have, which includes possibly buying a few guys out of leaving for the NFL.

My point is this, I'd just about guarantee the coaches think Mateer will be MUCH better next year. And if that is the case, you can't run him off. We're already going to struggle recruiting a few positions because of how we've done people. We don't need QB to be one of them. We don't need the reputation of having run off Gabriel, run off Arnold, and now we're going to run off Mateer, a Heisman front runner UNTIL HIS INJURY.
We lost on the gabriel gamble for sure. JA sucks badly.

You have nothing to really support the bolded para. I'm not sure if teams can be consistently consistent anyway in this dumb era of college football with an entire new roster every year (thanks ncaa).

We have the highest selling point to QBs in the entire country (or we used to before Seth littrell). If we did a multi-year guaranteed deal for mateer then again this staff is dumb and missed again on the most important position to evaluate (QB).

Mateer was less of a real heisman candidate than even arch manning was lolol

I'm just saying we're not married to mateer, try to over recruit him. The end.

I agree with you in theory, but I don’t think you tell anyone, including Mateer, that it’s likely his job in 2026. I don’t think he’s played well enough to be guaranteed anything. 8 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. That’s not the OU standard.
He. Is. Injured.

I just want to see him healthy again.

I'm not saying ALL of his struggles are due to his injury, but I am saying most of them started/began afterwards. I never thought he looked like a 1st round NFL draft pick before the injury, but he was PLENTY good enough for OU to win a NC. I'm still confident he can be pretty good, but it might take a reset this offseason, and a fully healed thumb, to get him there.

Alrighty. Didn’t have a lot of time, but I was able to do some research on a few names.

Now, these are younger guys from smaller programs who might be willing to compete with Mateer and/or Hawkins. Obviously we are working with hypotheticals. No particular order.

Colton Joseph from Old Dominion. Sophomore. 2518 yards, 21 tds and 9 interceptions.

Carlos Del Rio Wilson from Marshall. Junior, 1907 yards, 17 tds 4 ints.

Anthony Colandrea from UNLV. 2780 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

All these guys are runners, from what I watched.

I understand that the days of dudes actually competing for a spot could be over. With transfer and NIL players can go get paid to play and start from day one. Maybe programs either crown their starter day one or run him out of town and get a new guy in. Mateer should not be run out of Norman. But he also hasn’t played well enough to be crowned the starter again in January. However, the landscape has changed so much maybe OU is stuck with Mateer or go take chance on a new guy.

I’m not gonna argue with you on this point, because we really have no clue. But I don’t think the injury is a factor anymore. But maybe he comes back after the three weeks before the playoff game and lights it up. Then I’d be more inclined to say the injury lasted a lot longer than many of us realized.

How crazy of you to think that an injury with a 4-6 week timeline isn’t the reason he is playing like crap 9 weeks after it occurred.

He played one of his best games at South Carolina a week after the Texas injury and we thought he was getting over it.. Then he played awful against Ole Miss. Some people fell back on the thumb excuse. Then we thought he was close to 100% in the second half of the Tennessee game. Then we thought the old Mateer was gonna show up after the much needed bye week. Then he played bad against Bama and MU. Now the thumb is the problem again I guess.

I don’t really care enough to look, but I wonder what Missouri fans are saying about Pribula and how he played last Saturday. I wonder if they are blaming his struggles on the ankle.

Yea Pribula suffered an awful ankle injury and was back in four weeks and honestly, didn’t look like it was bothering him at all.

I just fail to understand how people can blame the thumb for Mateer’s issues. He makes bad decisions. That’s not due to a thumb that he hurt more than two months ago. And he wasn’t very accurate before the injury. The thumb is a convenient excuse.

Before the injury, he was definitely not good enough to win a national championship.

PFF Grade by Game:
Illinois St - 90.6
Michigan - 76.8
Temple: 83.4
Auburn: 66.8
Kent St: DNP
Texas: 37.4
South Carolina: 58.2
Tennessee: 63.3
Alabama: 64.8
Mizzou: 55.7

He's right around a D average, which PFF qualifies as a backup. He's been acceptable vs. non power 4 teams, but nothing more than just average against power 4 teams. PFF grades aren't the end all be all, since they do not know the answers to the test (only BV/Arbuckle do), but it's still a good enough barometer.
