Football question

Rumors of staff changes. Of course, the same was said last year and nothing happened. Looking at JJF, DM, EJ….Regardless of anyone’s opinion, I don’t think BB is going anywhere.

next season going to be an adventure....and not in a good way
defense is losing halton/williams/daniels/rsj/mckinzie
potentially losing lewis/heineke/rmt
there was a strange tweet from guillory as well.

Bedwetting about the state of our defense is special. RMT was great, but this was an expected departure before the year even started, and he missed most of our key wins.

The key players to watch were Kip and Wein, and we already locked down Wein. Would love for Kip to return, but I just can't see him putting more on film than he already has. If we really need him, we might be able to put together the money like we did for Stuts, as true LBs just don't have massive earning potential in the NFL like they used. But we also got all-conference level production from a walk-on level talent that had been sparingly used in several years here.

Guillory would be a tough loss, but panicking about him selling a pair of headphones feels like an overreaction.

We will be turning away elite talent in the portal this offseason. If BV truly wants a guy, there isn't a player in the country that will say no. The concerns will be entirely on the other side of the ball.

don't care who we get in the portal...we're not going to be anywhere close next year on defense to where we were this year.
you don't lose williams/halton/lewis/heineke/mckinzie/daniels/rmt/jones jr/rsj....and stay the same or get better.
there's no overreaction on guillory...just pointed out a tweet.
and yes...the biggest concern is defense...because we know the offense will suck again with mateer at qb and arbuckle as oc.

How can you watch OU the last 4 years under BV and say defense is what worries you most?

did i say defense worries me most?
i said next year will be and adventure....because i see the offense not much better and the defense getting worse because of having to replace a large number of very good players.

You said defense is the biggest concern.

well...i'm concerned because as i said..i expect the offense to be bad.
so we must have a great defense again and i don't see it....losing so many great players.
I basically view OU as two separate teams. With the offense, I believe absolutely nothing the coaches and beat writers say. They spend all offseason talking about our players as if they are all dynamic, game-changing players, and none of them are even average. Sategna is the only guy in the past two years who was above average at his position, and he wasn’t even hyped up like some of the others.

Defensively, I think we will at least be good, and potentially much better than that, unless we get hammered in the portal. I know we lose a lot, but we also would have a lot back unless we have defections. But I understand your point: if our defense is “merely” good, we won’t be a good team given the state of the offense. Kind of like Riley’s last couple years: the offense was really good but not great, and as a result, we were no longer a playoff team.

I can't disagree enough. We've gotten significantly better every single year under BV, and at a certain point that trend won't continue, but we are still not at BV Clemson's level. We are getting close, but there is still a clear gap we haven't closed.

My prediction is that it's even better next year. I definitely COULD be wrong. Maybe we don't take another step, or perhaps even take a small step back, but "not going to be anywhere close" is silly message board hyperbole.

We spent most of the year without our top CB, to the point we started a true freshman that wasn't that highly recruited. Guillory was a 3-star and ranked around 400th in the country. And we have our defense running at such a level that we were fine.

RMT barely even played in our biggest wins, but again, we were fine. We have depth out the anus and brought in NFL caliber pass rushers that made an immediate impact. He's certainly a great player, but he barely even played in most of our key wins this year, so it's not truly a loss compared to what we put on the field this past year.

We started a walk-on LB that has 0% chance of getting drafted and didn't even get mop-up duties previous years. And were completely fine, because that's how good we are at developing LBs. I think Heinecke gets another year, but not even slightly worried if he doesn't. Kobie got processed, so that's not a loss.

Daniels was great for us, but that was a plug and play portal addition that we can replicate. Every talented LB/S in the country hoping to improve their draft stock will be begging for that role. It's not like we spent years developing him.

As for the DTs, Stone and Jackson would have been the starters regardless, and might be the best duo in the country. Halton and Damonic were great for us, but Bates won't have a problem adding depth/backups at DT. We are loaded on the DL.

the biggest concern is defense
Dude.

I mostly agree with this, and this season we very much looked like the inverse of a Riley team.

But I believe that BV is capable of putting an offense good enough to win it all...because he has. Pair our offense from year 2 with this defense and we win it all. Pair our year 1 offense...and MAYBE we win it all in that scenario as well. Lebby, Arbuckle, DG, and Mateer were all widely considered top 3 OC/QBs available. At a certain point, if you keep landing highly sought after guys, you'll have a good offense if for no other reason than dumb luck.

The notion that BV doesn't care about offense or willing to hold people accountable is based on absolutely no logic.

His primary blunder was hiring Littrell to maintain continuity while retaining Arnold, which he corrected immediately. Littrell didn't last the season and Arnold was shown the door as soon as it ended.

BV has landed three QBs, all of which were highly sought after. 2 of his 3 OCs have been a similar story.

One of my biggest gripes was not bringing in more OL help through the portal, but we did spend big on freshmen, several of which held their own and have exciting potential. Our 2027 class has 2 five star OL committed.

He does need to hold some position coaches accountable, which I'm confident he will. Would expect 1-3 changes incoming. My guess would be 2.
