GAME 19 - OKLAHOMA (11-7) @ SOUTH CAROLINA (10-8) 6:00pm CST on SECNETWORK

If I didn’t think I had a chance to have success, of course. That happens all the time.
Again, you ignore the fact that mid major coaches have very little chance of success. They have one opportunity to make the tourney. You can win 27 games, dominate your league, and then play one bad game in the conference tourney and you are done. People like you act like OU is a hopeless situation, yet our compete idiot of a coach managed to make the tourney last year despite losing two-thirds of his conference games because power schools have such a massive advantage.

You're crazy. It'll be +1 million to whoever it is. And they are in the unique position of being the golden calf of employment - a fired buyout (golden parachute) coach. Tell me you'd turn that one down "all the time".

Also look at cignetti.. he took a paycut to go to a podunk school just to get started as a HC and now hes going to like 10x his yearly salary and be the highest paid coach in the sport. These lower level guys wont always get Power 4 offers every year.

We are unique in offering a damn 5 year runway where you can fail 4/5 apparently and still maybe not even get fired

Loser himself is a perfect example. He was in the middle of the only good stretch of his career, was a big name in all the coaching rumors, and was obviously very popular at the time at Loyola. But when OU came calling, he took the offer and the massive raise. He likely knew he had maxed out at Loyola, and would never have a class like the one led by Krutwig. He also understood he would have a chance to coach much better players at OU. All that is true. He just is such a bad coach that he hasn’t been able to take advantage of the opportunity. But there is no doubt what the better job is.

This. And now he can buy entire farms in cash for his troubles and sadly, he'll still get to coach again somewhere likely at or near the same level of bball he left before (bc some idiots out there will still think he's a good coach bc of one dusty season)

Loyola went to the tourney with his roster the following year. Speaking about Krutwig like he's Blake Griffin on a roster that didn't log a single second in the NBA hilarious.

The hire hasn't worked out, but the deification of Krutwig is unbelievably cringe.

If you're already resigned to a mid-major coach, you've made my point. OU should be able to hire a good coach from a major conference, but we can't because our NIL sucks, the arena is bad and the fan support is laughable.

We can probably get the mid-major flavor of the month from Drake or whichever school does best this year, but that's a shot in the dark, at best. In this era, especially in the SEC, you've got to make more of a commitment. Period.

You ever watch a game and root for your team, know the outcome, and are okay with it just because it means you are one step closer to firing the HC?

It is such a weird place to be in. I am a Sooners fan through and through, especially basketball. I want us in the tournament every year. The quickest way for that to happen is a new HC. I am not rooting for us to lose, but I also see the writing on the wall in what is necessary for future success. It doesn't make losing any easier, bc I hate losing.

This sucks.

Yep, when you look over the SEC schedule you see very few wins. South Carolina was supposed to be one of those. It’s beyond embarrassing to lose to them how we did. We never really threatened them. We were flat and mostly uninterested.

We are about to find out how much the university cares about basketball.

it is what i referenced in the bama game thread .. they "rallied the troops" gave great effort and still lost .. and that is likely it for the season .

they will likely win some game because they are hot from 3 .. but i don't expect them to win a game the rest of the way ..

Show me many examples of power conference schools in recent years that have poached sitting head coaches from other power conference schools. Michigan? Nope. Iowa? Nope. A&M? Nope. West Virginia? Nope. Florida? Nope. Mizzou? Nope. Arizona? Nope. Iowa State? Nope. Texas Tech? Nope. BYU? Nope. Virginia? Nope. Vandy? Nope. Louisville? Nope. They all hired guys who came from a lower level or were assistants at good programs.

Indiana technically did but they hired a guy who had only been at West Virginia for one season after making the jump from a mid major. Texas did with Sean Miller. Kentucky did. Arkansas did when Cal and UK were mutually ready to divorce. There may be some others but the vast majority of schools aren’t able to snag another power conference coach who is succeeding at his current job. I mean, even in the one men’s sport where we are a blue blood, our last few head coaching hires have not been guys with prior head coaching experience, let alone at the highest level.

5 games in 5 days in Nashville shooting 60% from 3. What if we just become NC State and Kevin Keatts this thing to a Moser extension lmao

You hire the best coach you can, even if they are a mid major. You just have to be able to evaluate talent if dipping down.

Our last two mid major hires = failures
The proven coach = success

It’s not rocket science.

Anyone who thinks there is a proven science to coaching hires is narrow minded and overly simplistic. You cite a tiny sample size and ignore Billy and Kelvin having little to no proven track record. And I just gave you a much larger sample size than the three hires you cite.

Proven coaches can be great. They also can suck. Mid major coaches can be great. They also can suck. Defensive coaches can be great. They also can suck. Offensive coaches can be great. They also can suck. Hard-asses can be great. They also can suck. Player-friendly coaches can be great. They also can suck. It amazes me that people don't understand this concept. If there was a sure-fire, paint-by-numbers formula, no team would ever make a bad hire.

Moser's Tenure at OU looks similar to Capel's at Pitt. And he's been there 8 years now 😩 Only Capel has managed to finish in the top of the ACC at least twice.
