I didn't see this anywhere else on the board, so sorry if it is elsewhere. Did anyone else hear BBJ claim that OU offered the job to Gregg Marshall on the 10 pm sportscast last night? Of course, he went on to say that no one on either side would confirm.

If true, consider me underwhelmed.

I'm thinking this is the only reason why the search has gone on this long. He is still coaching his team in the NIT. Good coach, but not the wow factor everyone is wanting. I think he would be a good hire.

His connections are in the Southeast, more fitted for NC State. But this could be why this search has lasted so long..Go Sooners!!!!

After watching WSU blow W-State out of the arena last night with an impressive performance on both ends of the court, I can see why greenbug is so high on Marshall. His kids play hard, and they appear to be well coached. OU could definitely do worse.

No doubt. If people would watch more games than just OU, they would probably be able to form an educated opinion.

Agreed.

He's a very good coach, and I championed him on here a few months back. However, can he make the jump from WSU to OU? That's a big jump. I think he's a good coach, but I would question if he could recruit the level of player he would need at OU.

Camp -- you also seem to like Marshall. Reports from Gottlieb are that Marshall contacted OU, MU and NCSU, and all 3 told him "no thanks". Why would OU tell him no thanks? Does he have some skeletons in the closet we don't know about?

Okay once and for all can someone please give me a rational, detailed explanation of why Gregg Marshall would be such a horrible hire?

I don't think he would be horrible at all. I just wonder with any mid-major coach if he can make the jump.

Having said that, I would be happy if Marshall were named the new HC.

That is my main reservation as well, but at this juncture, who isn't going to have trouble recruiting against the slew of coaches in the Big XII-II? It's going to be tough. I do like the fact Marshall has had success at both stops...Winthrop was a lot of fun to watch when he was there and WSU has improved every year under him (even though they should have won the MO Valley this year). Don't forget, WSU lost to VCU in the bracket buster game on a very controversial foul call.

Only thing I can think of is Joe C has different views for the program and Marshall doesn't fit in. However, is he really in a position to be telling proven mid-major coaches "don't bother"? I don't know the answer to that b/c he has way more info than I do. MU was probably searching before Anderson officially left and knew of Painter. NCSU is just plain delusional.

I guess i would not mind Marshall, def not my first or second choice though.

I like the zone defenses he uses, however i cannot stand the somewhat Princeton style of offense he runs.

I'd prefer a coach who plays uptempo.

At Winthrop his teams played uptempo and pressed full court.

I live in Wichita and am a big WSU fan. While Marshall seems to have done a solid job here, I am usually not impressed with his in-game coaching. They have lost a few games on what I and other observers feel are coach related issues. I have also heard from current and former players that he is hard to get along with, and is a bit of a jerk? Supposedly he is kinda pompous. Thats what I have heard. I don't know it for a fact. I also question his ability to recruit Big 12 caliber players.
I just feel that if we can't score a home run type of coach, I would rather see us get either 1) a proven X's and O's guy that has won at this level or 2) a young exciting coach that has shown great recruiting prowess.

Not really sure what years your talking about, but the majority of the time he was at Winthrop and now at WSU he runs a slow tempo Princeton style offense.

I'm sure there are times when he changed things up, however I have never heard of his offensive philosophy being classified as up tempo.

Check his roster. He doesn't just recruit the Southeast.

I think far too many people are hung up on mid-major this and mid-major that.....OBVIOUSLY the playing field has evened out the last few years and mid-mjor teams AND coaches can compete. There isn't some magic button a guy pushes to all of a sudden be a high major coach.....you either know the game and can coach...or you don't. If a guy is a proven winner at a mid-major he could do just as well at a high-major.....if you have a system....and you recruit guys who fit that system, get your guys to play hard and you coach em' up, you will be able to compete at a high level.

Look at Butler...they have good players but they don't have a team full of high-major players coming out of HS.....same at OU....you don't have to have a team full of McD's All Americans to compete in the Big XII....A guy could add one or two pieces to what is already here and win consistently with good coaching. We could use a talent upgrade but they can compete now with the right pieces added to the mix.

I live in Wichita and have been to many WSU games this year and the past. While he may recruit "decently," he is not a good "coach of the game." I am pretty good friends with a G.A who was under Gregg., that is now at a different school. Marshall is an idiot!! Those of you that want to "settle," let's talk in two or three years. By that time, we will be known as the NIT team of the Big 12.
