Looking at the tape from last night, I was impressed with the rebounding from our guards during crunch time. There was a stretch starting at around 7 minutes left in game (up 12 at the time) where the shortest guy on the court, Woodard, came up with 3 boards IN A ROW (skying for two of them), then Hield grabbed one, and finally Walker. We stretched our lead out to 18 points on the ensuing possessions and put the game away.

Woodard, Hield, and Cousins, combined for 1 less board (12) than Spangler, Thomas, and Lattin (13).

All that being said, WVU got way too many offensive boards. So we could have done a better job, but we grabbed them when they mattered. Great job guys!

Good to see the guards grab some boards, but it's not a good thing if the guards are nearly out rebounding the guys inside

Our guards have rebounded well the entire season. That's one of our greatest strengths.

Buddy is third in rebounding with a 5.4 rpg average. That's just .04 of a percentage point behind Thomas. Cousins is fourth with a 5.2 rpg average. And, believe it or not, Jordan Woodard is fifth with a 3.6 rpg average. Khadeem Lattin is sixth with a 3.0 rpg average.

For the record, no one is even close to the guy in first place. Spangler controls the boards at a 8.0 rpg clip.

Buddy and Isaiah are 2 of the very best rebounding guards in the country

Didn't Ryan lead the conference in rebounding last year at just under 10 a game? He's tenacious for a 6'8" player…. if he's even that tall.

Yes he did. Ryan is truly amazing for his size. Heart and hustle defines everything he does on a basketball court.

That tribal tat alone starts his rebound count at 1 or 2

I think part of the reason the guards can get to them is Ryan is taking up two guys on the rebound a lot of times. The other team knows he is a really good rebounder and so he draws more attention. That is just what I think I see during the game. Ryan sometimes will go up fighting a couple of guys and he or they can't get it and Buddy or Isaiah comes out with it. Just another reason to like Ryan's work.

Spangs Reb is down bc our guards are rebounding so well and Thomas is there as well. Last year was almost 10 rpg...

No. What it means is that we have guards who rebound exceptionally well. And why shouldn't we when two of our starting guards are 6-4 and very athletic.

Our guards don't normally out-muscle the post players for rebounds under the basket (though Cousins and Buddy sometimes do). But because both are so athletic and active, they most often have a rebounding advantage over the opposing teams' guards.

I get a kick out of the TV commentators making statements like, "Cousins hasn't played very well tonight." In truth, Cousins' defense and rebounding are normally huge factors in our wins, even on those occasions when he doesn't shoot particularly well.

Sometimes Cousins is opposite of Spangler when the opposing team is shooting free throws.

In games where Lon feels Thomas and Spangler can do the job, he is releasing the guards "on the shot", so that they can beat the defense down court and score in transition.

Where he sends everyone to the defensive glass, our guards have rebounded very well.

We have and are going to get caught giving up offensive rebounds when you release your guards early and the ball comes off the rim long. Just going to happen. If you want to run, and we generally do, you have to count on your bigs to rebound and outlet and your guards need to be at the time line when they receive the outlet.

This is pretty simplistic and it is more complicated, e.g. sometimes you don't release everyone.

But, I like what we do, even though, there are risks associated with the strategy.

I'm sure lon adjusts through a game if he feels we are being pounded on the glass.

This being said, when it is there responsibility to rebound, I think Buddy and Cousins do an outstanding job.
