Gut feeling only- HC

Not that this thread is about crime, but I have to defend my city a bit. This statement is not true.

Tulsa is close to Chicago in total violent crime rate, but still 2-3 spots less per capita. And seeing the details is important. Most of Tulsa's numbers come from rape and aggravated assault/domestic. Chicago is much higher on murder and armed robbery.

Non-violent crime rates per capita, which is the type of crime that 99% of us will be a victim of if we are a victim of crime, Tulsa is 36 places lower than Chicago and 26 places lower than OKC. And to further this, as in a lot of cities, the overwhelming majority of violent crime in Tulsa occurs in 2-3 small geographic areas of the city.

Back to the topic at hand, as someone that has Chicago as one of my top 3 destinations to go to in the US, I can understand Moser's hesitancy to leave, especially since he has spent the majority of his life in Illinois or the surrounding area.

If he is our guy for more than just a few years, I would rather him take his time and be sure than avoid a Dana Altman-Arkansas moment.

And not all violent crimes are the same as some are more violent than others. An example is robbery, alone, is categorized as a violent crime but is obviously less violent than redrum.

I wasn't planning on getting in an argument but according to FBI statistics, Tulsa ranks 29th in violent crime rate and Chicago wasn't in the top 30.

Of course I feel safe in Tulsa when I go there because I don't venture into certain areas, just like the people in Chicago. It's kind of a silly argument.

Joe had this problem with Gene Stephenson. It led to Sunny Golloway which was controversial regime at best.

I wish Golloway had never left. I can hardly watch our baseball team anymore.

Moser has no recruiting ties to this area. He has never shown an ability to recruit the type of basketball players that can compete with the top 4 in Big12. Our roster is a disaster. He’s starting from scratch with no recruiting relationships in Oklahoma or texas, or anywhere in our recruiting footprint.

He’s a good coach but I worry about recruiting. A lot.

This move doesn’t really make sense for OU or for Moser.

I feel like Najera would be the best recruiter. I base that on nothing but a gut feeling by the way.

  • I know someone who has recruited this area extensively.
  • I know someone who has shown the ability to recruit the type of basketball players that can compete in the big 12... In fact, this person 31-7, 23-11, and 23-11 at an inferior Big 12 program in his last 3 years
  • I know someone who can put together a competent roster
  • I know someone with lots of recruiting relationships in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Kansas
  • I know someone who has out-performed Moser in pretty much every way possible

The person I reference will not get a phone call.

Agreed. I don't think Moser is a bad coach, I just don't see the fit.

Tubbs was 45 when OU hired him.
Sampson was 39 when OU hired him.
Capel was 31 when OU hired him.
Kruger was 59 when OU hired him.

Moser is 52.
Kellen is 36.
McCasland is 44.

Not making any point with the ages, just posting. My first comment is independent of the age comparison.

Hire three guys from Texas to be his assistants. I think there are better choices but if he’s a guy let’s do it. Hire quanas or Hollis to be on staff.

So if you could hire Coach K right now or Jim Boeheim or Work Roy Williams or Markvue you wouldn’t do it because of age?

Roy Williams just retired, and according to some on here, is a despicable cheater.

Boeheim kept a child abuser on his staff for a number of years.

Coach K of the recently 13-11 Duke Blue Devils with all of that talent?

The difference in those guys and Moser is that they have all won at an ELITE level for a LONG time. Moser has not. If we're hiring a non-sure thing, I'd prefer it not be a soon-to-be 53 year old coach that is just recently finding success in his career. Dude has been dreadful up until the past couple of years, and even the past two wasn't all that great.

I want Najera and Carlos slim. STAT!

Yes, he would need to hire some excellent recruiters with ties to this area. Recruiting is the lifeblood.

Maybe he'll learn and maybe we are too harsh on him. I understand it's nice to be right, but many times we only know until we do know and at this point we dun't know.

So stop saying age and say I don’t think he can win at OU because he isn’t successful.

I never once said he can't win at OU because of his age.

His age has only come up in that it shows a) his only real success was at a pretty old age, and b) he is likely of an age where he isn't going to improve much as a coach.

If you are going to attack my point, at least attack it correctly please.

Behind Illinois, KS is his most heavily recruited state while at Loyola. His top recruit this year is from TX.

I missed the Carlos Slim information. Is it legit? What exactly was said and by whom? thanks

I'm 58, so thanks for making me feel like it's time to make funeral arrangements. ;) As for your second point, I believe Kelvin Sampson when he says that coaching in the NBA has made him a better offensive coach. He would have been about my age now when he learned a few new offensive tricks, so don't give up on Moser because of age just yet.

Sorry you are old.

ESPN Chicago radio guy with a dollar amount to the offer from OU. This would be the same as Lon made last year, around $3.4M

Doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade. Ouch.
