Has OU ever had a better backcourt?

Buddy Hield is going to go down as probably the best guard player of all time at OU but he has not been the winner that Hollis Price was.

Hollis
Senior year - Elite 8 - (lost to the championship team) - Big 12 tournament champs
Junior year - Final 4 - Big 12 tournament champs

This group has only made it to the sweet 16.

I go with Hollis Price and Co. until proven otherwise and these 3 guys haven't proven it yet. Hopefully they will in March though.

1988

Grace 15 points per game, 39% from 3, 4 rebounds 70% from the line
Blaylock 16 points per game, 39% from 3, 4 rebounds and 68% from the line
Sieger 11 points per game, 40% from 3, 5 rebounds and 67% from the line

2016
Hield 25.9 points per game, 52.3% from 3, 5 rebounds and 90% from the line
Woodard 14.9 points per game, 54.4% from 3, 3.4 rebounds and 84.7% from the line
Cousins 13.1 points per game, 44.9% from 3, 4.3 rebounds and 60% from the line

The season is not over but numbers favor 2016 at this point in my opinion.

We can agree that we need to wait until the end of the year to fully assess and compare.

There have been some terrific backcourt trios in OU's history since I have been a fan.

Hollis
Quannas
Ebi

was a terrific trio.

Didn't Tim McCalister play alongside Anthony Bowie? That was a great backcourt.

Yes, you are right.

Tim McCalister played 4 years at OU ... 1984, 85, 86, 87
Anthony Bowie played 2 years at OU ........ 1985, 86

In 1986, junior Tim McCalister averaged 18.2 ppg; while senior Anthony Bowie averaged 13.3 ppg. Senior Linwood Davis (7.9 ppg) was a solid PG on that team.

HP is one of my favorite Sooners eva. He had the benefit of a pretty polished post player while at OU...Spangler is a nice player and so was Osby, but HP had the benefit of some pretty good post players. It's a great argument, but I'd take this backcourt

If this team had Aaron McGhee I would bet my house the Sooners bring home a national championship.

The guy was as good as anyone in college basketball by the end of his sr year . He got MVP of a damn good regional bracket .

Obviously he wasnt some nba prospect , but from FEB on that year ...... There wasn't a better player in college basketball .Im not saying he was the best player in college , but he didn't take a back seat to anyone during that last stretch of his sr year

Hollis was a great player no doubt but Buddy is better . Ace might have been the brightest star on that final four team.

I loved Hollis but Buddy is better, due to his improvement from last year to this year. Hollis was smaller so maybe not a fair comparison.

I agree on McGee, he was a beast his senior year in the tournament.

Hollis Price

2002 16 ppg, 3 rpg, fg% 45; 3fg% 38, FT% 84, A 3, TO 2, St 2 Bl 0
2003 18ppg, 3 rpg, fg% 45, 3fg% 43, ft% 93, A 3, TO 2, St 2, Bl o

Buddy Hield

2015 17 ppg, 5 rpg, fg% 41, 3fg% 36, FT% 82, A 2, TO 2, ST 1 Bl o
2016 26 ppg, 6 rpg, fg% 53; 3fg% 53%, FT% 90, A 3, TO 3, St 1, Bl 1

I loved Hollis but I just don't see the comparison between the senior years. Buddy is pretty much better across the board. He is almost scoring 50% more. He three point shooting percentage is 10% higher, he has 100% more rebounds. Obviously he has to finish the season, but I think Buddy's numbers are going to improve if anything.

Ricky Grace T. Mullins Mookie.

these 3 would wear out Buddy Cousins and Jordan pretty fast. hands down.

Challenge accepted. Wish we could see this.

My only problem with all the Buddy love (see what I did there?) is that in a comparison with Hollis, I take Hollis as a freshman over Buddy as a freshman, Hollis as a sophomore over Buddy as a sophomore, and Hollis as a junior over Buddy as a junior.

I agree that Buddy's senior year is probably the best season ever (so far) for an OU guard, again, if we're talking a single season.

But let's not sleep on Hollis. He was a top 2-3 player in the country, AS A JUNIOR. Hollis averaged more assists every season than Buddy has in his best. Hollis shot better every season (I think), except their senior years.

They played in two entirely different styles, in two entirely different eras of ball, with different rules, different coaches, etc.

Not sure why we can't just say both were great college players, and amongst the best guards OU has ever had, and leave it at that.

The one stat I'd be interested in seeing is Ken Pom's efficiency stats for each of Hollis' 4 seasons compared to Buddy's. I don't currently have access to that.

We've had some pretty good back courts over the years, even in the years we didn't get to the Final Four. Back then some wing players were considered guards and they could swing from small forward to shooting guard such as David Little or Skeeter Henry. Check these:

1982
Bo Overton
Shawn Clark
Raymond Whitley
David Little
Chuck Barnett

1989
Mookie Blaylock
Terry Evans
Terrance Mullins
Damon Patterson
Skeeter Henry

1990

Terry Evans
Smokey McCovery
Skeeter Henry
Terrance Mullins
Damon Patterson
Brent Price
