Houston Cougars..... just sayin'

No joke. If only we could make a Final Four or something.

Youre right we make a final four, 3 basketball seasons ago.. were good. Nothing is wrong with the team.. keep riding this **** sandwich. All good

That doesn't seem right. Maybe 2009 for THIS version of the board? I know I talking hoops on an OU bball board during the Kelvin era.
There were other boards. OUInsider and SoonerFans and a few others. This was the first dedicated to OU basketball primarily.

No it was 2009 so it was definitely Capel era. This board will be 10 years old by this time next year. I'm sure OUHoops knows the exact date.

Board was started in 2008 right before the beginning of Blake Griffin's sophomore season. The third year of the Capel era I believe.

I actually don't mind that. Most coaches draw up a play assuming there will be an on ball defender, so Kelvin threw them a softball to account for an extra defender. In the end, a freshman heaved a shot from 28 feet and made it. **** happens.

When Christian Laettner beat Kentucky in '92, which to this day is widely considered the most exciting and watched play in NCAA history, there also wasn't anyone guarding the inbounds pass. Every time the buzzer beater occurs, those analyzing on TV state the obvious in that it's so much easier to connect on a long pass when there is no one guarding the inbounds.

I was really pulling for Houston. Kelvin is a great coach, and I wish our defense was even close to as good as Houston’s. That said, I can never figure out why a coach does not put a face in front of the inbounds passer. It seems to never end well for the team on defense.

I was saying that during the play. With less than 4s you have to either force a shorter pass in the backcourt or make the long throw very uncomfortable. I get that coaches want to have a 5 on 4 defense but that advantage is eliminated if the offense can catch a deep pass. Never any guarantees but play the odds based on time left and practice those situations! It looked like M had practiced their play.

You are showing your ignorance here. I'm about as big a Kelvin fan as there is. Always have been. Always will be. Seems like YOU are the one that is new here.

Haha, whatever I’ve had basketball season tickets since Tubbs first year. I know what I’m talking about. Do you lol? The fans complained much louder about Kelvin that anything they have about Lon - that’s a fact.

Must have been the bball only board at OUInsider. iirc, a lot of the folks posting there basically moved here when it opened, thus the feel was very similar. I just know we were having similar message board discussions like this when Kelvin was coaching.

Some in this group of people have been posting on the same boards since '95. It all just kinda runs together.

I genuinely commend you and every other season-ticket holder who shows up at the games. Yes, that would give you a leg up on a lot that goes on regarding the fan base...but you know what they say about actions and words. If the people who hated Kelvin was anywhere close to what you have us believe, then there is a 0% chance he would have received a standing ovation at Kellen's senior night - only one year after he left the program and left us with probation.

Yes, there was a very vocal minority who just didn't like him. No one denies that. Others like myself wished he did a little better in the NCAA tournament, but knew he was a terrific coach and would keep us relevant. Others like WTSooner and kansasooner felt he could do no wrong. That's just the way it was with Kelvin, and we're certainly not going to come to an agreement now. I just don't see where you get your numbers from in regards to so many people hating him (you said 95% in a separate thread).

I wouldn't want KS back as coach but his team would have clean our clock

it was a vocal bunch but it wasn't that many people outside the coaching community.

My 95% may be an exaggeration buy as you know the many times we had an early exit everyone you spoke with complained and whined about him. And honestly no one can say they liked his style of slow ball and scoring 55 points a game. Of course we liked winning but he never had years like Billy winning 30+ games, yes he was solid at winning 20 but pretty boring in my opinion. And yes there are a few that, like Sherri, would defend him and like it if he walked out to mid court and took a poop on the floor lol.

You are correct. The discussions about Kelvin started on the OUInsider BB board. Criticism about his offense and early exits from the NCAA tourney were fairly common. They continued over here when this board was launched in October, 2008.

doesnt seem like 10 years. seems like just a couple years back. geez.

I could have sworn someone posted that they never worried about a lead late in the game with Kelvin....?

I did. Houston was down late. Took the lead and should have won. If you took that to mean I thought OU slways wonckose games you are silly. I just had a lot of confidence. Now I have very little
