I figured we'd be scanning intermurals for warm bodies.

Not only did coach fill spots, but he actually got a few who could (optimistically) be rather decent.

While the jury is obviously still out on them, his recruiting efforts leave me with hope that was rather lacking just a few weeks ago.

good job coach. nice damage control.

I absolutely agree. I'm especially excited about getting Blair and Newell, and from what I have read Ahmed has a lot of upside.

To me, Newell, Blair, Washington, TJ Taylor, and Cam Clark is the kind of class we should be ecstatic to get ANY year.

Add in the potential long-term contributions of Thompson, Neal, and Ahmed, and I think it's a pretty stellar class all things considered.

Those two alongside clark and ty makes a really good guard class! They greatly improve our above the rim ability!

To get not one, but two point guards that appear to be capable of playing at the D-1 level this late in the game was great. Not a bad class of incoming freshmen according to ESPN:

Clark = 95 Scout Grade
Taylor = 94 Scout Grade
Newell = 89 Scout Grade
Neal = 87 Scout Grade
Ahmed = 86 Scout Grade

90-100: Immediate Impact Prospect

Player demonstrates rare abilities and has the potential to start as a freshman for a national, top-25 program.

80-89: High Major Prospect

Player has the potential to start or significantly contribute as a freshman for most top national Division I programs.

Sounds like recruiting, according to ESPN, was pretty exceptional.

On paper and by highlights these new guys look to add a step or two of more quickness than last years team had. Hope this makes up for some of the lazy defense we saw at times last year. Really like that these guys can all shoot the ball 10 ft from the hoop because Capel's offense gets shooters good looks.

Here is what I found for the explanation of ESPN's Scouts Inc. basketball grading scale (different from what you found and not as optomistic an outlook for our spring freshman):

The grading scale for basketball recruiting is similar to the grading scale used for football, with a few subtle differences.

Scouts Inc. High School Basketball Grading System

98-100: High-major plus prospect
Player demonstrates rare abilities. He should have an immediate impact at a national program with the potential for early entry into the NBA.

94-97: High-major prospect
Player has the potential to significantly contribute as a freshman for most national programs. He could be a three- or four-year starter and have an opportunity for all-league honors.

90-93: High-major minus prospect
Player has the potential to significantly contribute to a national program as a freshman. He could be a four-year contributor with an opportunity to start over the course of his career.

87-89: Mid-major plus prospect
Player could contribute for three or four years at a high-major program or have a significant impact as a freshman at a mid-major program.

83-86: Mid-major prospect
Player should be a solid contributor and two- or three-year starter at a mid-major program.

80-82: Mid-major minus prospect
Player could be a three- or four-year contributor with an opportunity to eventually start at a mid-major program.

77-79: Low-major plus prospect
Player could contribute at a mid-major school but should be a significant contributor as a freshman at a low-major program.

73-76: Low-major prospect
Player should be a solid contributor and two- or three-year starter at a low-major program.

70-72: Low-major minus prospect
Player could be a three- or four-year contributor with an opportunity to eventually start at a low-major program.

40: Pending Prospect
Player evaluation is pending film.

Well that sucks.

So the scale runs from 70 to 100? And a prospect that hasn't been evaluated gets a 40?

Weird!

More weird is that the same site has two different explanations for what a ranking is supposed to predict. I got my stuff directly from ESPN as well. Oh well, all I see is that we have two A's, a B+ and two B's. So overall I guess that our FRESHMAN class get's a B+.

Using either scale, I think we did very well, all things considered......

All I know it is wonderful to finally feel like we've put last season behind us and can talk about next. Just from what I've read on here, I'm pretty stoked about the guys we have coming in.

excellent point. hopefully this will help us turn the corner on discussing and rehashing last season.

Exactly! How long has it been since OU had two point guards on the roster? Three if you count T. J. Taylor. When you consider how much our coaches have struggled to sign and retain just one true point guard, I see that as a major accomplishment. I also like the fact that our back court newbies can play more than one position.

There are still plenty of unanswered question surrounding this team. But thanks to Coach Capel's late push to sign the best players available who wanted to be Sooners, I'm definitely more optimistic now than I was two weeks ago. Nice job, Coach!

Jeff did get more out of the late signing than I thought possible. Enough players to scrimmage and compete for pt. We now have 3 upperclassmen. It should also mean he can focus on adding 2 or 3 players next fall, instead of 6 or 7.

He did a good job. We should be competitive next year.
