I'm beginning to think we need to

Let me remind you that a coach's job is to do what is best for the TEAM, not any of the individuals on the team. Sherri does a great job of that. AO was not very productive before she lost weight and got in condition and didn't earn the playing time others did. When she improved, she earned the playing time she got. Nothing was handed to her and nothing should have been handed to her and I don't care who was in the stands or how far they drove to watch the Sooners play.

No need to remind me "that a coach's job is to do what is best for the TEAM..." I'm not the one trying to win a NC! Your opinion and mine just happen to differ. I don't think you'll find a coach east or west of the Mississippi that will not try to get a local player a few minutes in the game when they are playing in their hometown. Geez Norm! It's one of the things that coaches do to help with recruiting AND to give players an opportunity to play in their hometowns. A good coach will make sure they get the reserve player in the FIRST opportunity that it makes sense. That didn't happen in AO's situation and then later in the game SC had to do what was in the best interest of the team to win the game. She had to forsake the opportunity of a local player getting a few minutes. Again...it should have happened earlier. It's not about "handing" anything to anyone; especially a player. You may not care "how far" fans drove, and fans driving to see the team on the road is the least of the programs problem at this point. They are trying to figure out how to get fans in Norman to drive to LNC. Again...this about effective recruiting or unfortunately the lack there of. By the way...Happy March Madness. My fav time of year!:woot

I thought it was pretty well known that Abi came to OU because she could relax behind Courtney and avoid the spotlight for a couple of years? Did Abi even try to play before late her junior year?

:facepalm

If you believe that, I have a really good price on FRESH sushi coming your way via UPS Ground shipping. What I remember AO saying was she came to OU to play with AP and CP as well as to develop her skills while having to practice against CP. I'm sure "Abi tried to play every chance she got"...and that was every time she sat on that bench! What player does NOT want to play? I think AO was intelligent enough to know that she would PROBABLY not get any playing time as a starter until her senior year. But you best believe that she did not think she would face her junior year watching AP play the 4 then sub for CP at the 5 while AT moved to the 4 and AO sat on the bench...MOST of the season. In my every so humble opinion...when you have 4 MCD AA on your team, you figure out how to strategically get them on the court as much as possible within the strategy of winning the game. OTHERWISE, other MCD AA's will say, "thanks, but no thanks" when you offer an official visit, let alone a scholarship. Again, it's back to what has caused average at best recruiting classes.

I hope everyone who came to watch AO play reminded her that it was HER responsibility to get in shape so she could see some playing time the next time she was in town.

I have a hard time shedding tears for those who fail to help themselves. Fortunately, AO finally saw what she needed to do to play and she was successful.

A player who has lived in her father's basketball spotlight and has other ambitions and interests in life may well not wish to live in that spotlight. Let Courtney have it. I'll just sit here and go to college like the normal teenager that I might have been had I not had Akeem as a father.

Norm, stop it! The game was Nov 21st of her freshman year...she'd barely learned her way around the campus, let alone all of the intricacies of Div I basketball. Are you telling me that in shape, outta shape...she didn't deserve the RESPECT to play a minute or two in her hometown?

I really believe SC wanted AO to play that day. She just should have played her early when ...
"She scored the Sooners first four points of the half and later used a rebound and free throw to give them their biggest lead 62-41 with 10:07 to play..." instead of when... "UCLA pulled within seven 73-66 after a three-point play from Quinn with 1:47 to play."

I'm through here. It's easier and quicker to just go downstairs and take a claw hammer to my skull.

Shame on Sherri for NOT knowing that UCLA would make the game close at the end and prevent the subs from playing a few minutes. How could she be SOOOOO ignorant not to have known that?!?!

Norm, Norm, Norm. As a "Super Moderator" of a college WBB forum, surely you've seen enough and heard enough to know that a part of recruiting and player respect is to get a team from the players hometown on your schedule at least once during their 4 years for players when their hometown is not within your conference. The other thing a coaching staff does when those games take place, if the player is a reserve...an assistant should remind the head coach to get the player in THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY, because a SECOND OPPORTUNITY may not present itself...which is what happened at UCLA with AO. I just remember how humiliating it must have been for AO with the crowd...her high school team, family, etc.. screaming her name at the end of the game when it was too risky to make a change in the line-up.

So Norm, let's move on to other aspects of recruiting. Do you know of any Top 25 recruits with OU on their list?

When you have CP and AP in front of you, no matter whose daughter you are or how good you are, you are going to have a tough time getting on the court.

I think Abi should have played more as a sophmore and junior, but that's just me. I would have given her more minutes.

That said, let's not all act like Sherri doesn't have her favorites and doesn't play them more than others -- particularly if you are in her dog house for a real or perceived transgression. That's one of the main criticisms of Sherri that I've heard most consistently over the years.

That's not unusual for coaches, but my understanding is SC takes it to a higher level. That was also a major, major criticism of her at Norman High before she graced the Lloyd Noble.

I've been told first hand that's why Lauren Selmon went to Baylor, why Taylor Hardeman went to OSU and why several other players have turned us down.

CP could have walked up and down the court, missed 10,000 layups) and AO could have been the second coming and Abi wouldn't have seen the floor any more than she did and we all know it -- or if you know anything about this program, you should.

Rumor, innuendo, exaggeration, unsubstantiated non-specific "facts."

Banjo

No, that is not rumor or innuendo, exaggeration or unsubstantiated. Just about every parent whose children was at Norman High knows this.

My daughters played ball with Hardeman and Selmon at Norman High and with clubs. I've spent many, many hours talking to those parents and the girl's siblings. Got it?

And if you really think AO, no matter how good she was, would ever have played more than she did as long as CP had two arms and two legs then I'm afraid you don't know very much.

Just because you don't like what I've said, doesn't make it untrue.

ID Theft alert! I think Soonerbay has stolen Oliver's login. I've not seen this kind of logic that did not emanate from California

I've followed this team since 2000, and I don't believe I've ever seen an inferior player get preferential treatment. I would challenge whoever really made this post to give us one concrete example. The only examples I can even dream of would be sometimes in the preseason when new players get some extended time to make good. If nothing else Sherri is a thorough professional, and she well knows that the road to success is playing the best players.

......That was also a major, major criticism of her at Norman High before she graced the Lloyd Noble.
This is even more ludicrous. She had fantastic success at Norman, and she certainly didn't get it by not playing her best players. I live in Norman, my kid played basketball here, and I've never ever heard that claim before.

I've been told first hand that's why Lauren Selmon went to Baylor, why Taylor Hardeman went to OSU and why several other players have turned us down.
I've been told first hand that those two were not offered, because however much Sherri liked their sisters, she goes for talent, not nepotism. If you look at their careers, you can see Sherri made the right choices.

CP could have walked up and down the court, missed 10,000 layups) and AO could have been the second coming and Abi wouldn't have seen the floor any more than she did and we all know it -- or if you know anything about this program, you should.
Well, since neither side of that argument is true, the speculation is meaningless. Abi eventually became a nice player - but on her best day, she was not as good as Courtney on a below average day -- and if you know anything about this program, you should know that.

35TT, I'm many things, but not a hacker or thief. :ez-roll:

And the "nice" player was "nice" enough to do very well her senior year. Thank goodness she was "nice" enough because there has not been another post player to be as consistently strong, fundamentally sound and focused as "nice" AO when given the opportunity...which brings me to something else. I completely believe the "SC Dog House" experience. IMO...If there had been a post player that could do half of what AO did her senior year (the only year we really saw her play), SC would have started that player and AO would still be waiting on playing time at OU. During one of the OPAC (old players and coaches..LOL) annual reunions at the CA state championships, it has been said that AO was in the SC dog house because she refused to red-shirt.

I hear AO is in Hollywood these days. I can't wait for the movie she produces and we see a curly head blonde named Coach Steel or Oar or Poale that wears stilettos.:ez-laugh:

It's not "preferential treatment" (it's a good recruiting move...and simple act of kindness and appreciation) to have a freshman get a few minutes in their hometown. The coach has to know when it needs to be done...a very basic coaching skill. Maybe one of the assistants forgot to remind SC to get AO in the game because they were too busy gazing into the stands watching the actors that had come out to see AO while she was HOME.

Thank you!!!

This board is full of that!

IMO...this forum is seldom full of fact (other than statistics), or fans that call a spade a spade. I do believe there are a few of us that had been supportive donors and fans that are just simply disappointed. I'm still a fan of the players. I just refuse to act like it's a wonderful day in the neighborhood. Some of you can't handle the truth/substantiated specific facts.

And you would have been the first to complain if CP didn't get her double double because Sherri took her out of some games and replaced her with AO. Apparently, you are the only one who complained because AO is still tight with this coaching staff.

I have been disappointed in recruiting in some classes and have said so but, to say that AO not getting to play in the UCLA game hurt our recruiting in California is laughable. You can't name one single player who said she was considering OU but changed her mind after that game. Not one!
