Right now IMO. Joe C tried like crazy to get him to OU and I see why. Classy and sharp and I think clean on the recruiting junk going on right now. Has a system and recruits to it and sticks to it. Very good recruiter and in game coach. I think right now he is better than all the others. Thoughts??

He gets good players but man they improve over their careers. Their player development is as good as anyone in the game right now.

He's top 5 for sure. Wright, K, Self, Izzo, & Bennett are on a different level than everyone else.

Hottest? Sure.

Best? Seems premature.

He is the best right now. The other top coaches are running antiquated systems. He's running the best system of basketball that we know of right now, and is recruiting personnel expertly to fit that system. Other programs will catch up, but he's got a head start and the talent in the pipeline to sustain it (although he may lose his whole team to the draft after this performance).

On a side note, this is what is so frustrating about Mike Stoops being the DC at OU. The offensive system is miles ahead of what anyone is running, and we have a HUGE advantage. But that's being mitigated by defensive incompetence. We have a few years head start, but other coaches will catch up and start implementing what Lincoln is doing. We've got to capitalize on this now, and if the defense shores up you'll see multiple football championships over the next 5 years, and we'll win them in a way that looked like Nova's title run this year.

Come on now. The offense we are running is a combination of what we ran under Leach, and some running game principals that have been around for decades. We're not the only ones doing it, we're just the only ones doing it well, and doing it at a school that can recruit tier 1 talent.

As for the defense, for the most part, defense is defense. If you run it well, and/or have the athletes, you can make just about anything work. OU fans like to dog the 3-4 we've been running, but it's what Bama and half the NFL run. We just either aren't teaching it right, or we don't have the athletes on D currently. If its the second thing, then it wouldn't matter what scheme we ran. Also, in 2015 our defense was pretty darn good. Top 5 nationally in D efficiency. Mike Stoops didn't forget how to coach defense between 2015 and now. But we don't need some exotic scheme to be good/solid on D. Matter of fact, I think we'll be just that this year. And it won't be b/c we changed D schemes, or b/c Mike magically learned how to coach defense.

I want to copy and paste this over at the CC. Great description of our defense in football.

This is so absurd I don't even know where to begin. You think Lincoln Riley just stumbled into the best offense in NCAA history by tweaking a couple of things from Mike Leach's offense? This offense resembles the Mike Leach offense in the way that we resemble our fish/frog ancestor that crawled out of the primordial oceans 3 billion years ago. It may have evolved from it, but it's not even close to the same thing. Lincoln's offense is miles ahead of anything anyone else is doing, and the proof is in the pudding.

Your comments about the defense are also cringe worthy, but this isn't a football board so I'll leave it at that.

So I guess the Leach offense was miles ahead of anything anybody was doing in 2000? And in 2008, with Sam Bradford at QB and Kevin Wilson calling the plays, again, OU just stumbled upon some new offense that nobody could stop? There are other examples too.

OR.....maybe there is another reason for OU's successes. Most notably, the players and an overall willingness to be as aggressive and open as we needed to be. But suggesting other teams don't run the same stuff we're running? That is hilarious. We just run it better b/c LR is a great coach/organizer, and b/c OU has superior talent. Mostly the later. What other school is running anything resembling the offense OU is running, AND is getting the types of players OU is? There isn't one. The schools that are landing top 10 talent, aren't running this system for the most part. Clemson is probably the closest example, and they were top 15 in O efficiency this year breaking in a new QB, and either slightly in front of us or behind us the two proceeding years.

We do have a history of doing innovative things on offense, it's the reason why we ended up with Lincoln Riley as coordinator instead of some 3 yards and a cloud of dust relic.

We are doing things with alignments, motion, and personnel that nobody else is doing. Period. There's a reason that Lincoln was singled out by Bob as the brightest offensive mind in college football, brought in as OC, and given the head coaching job at the age of 33.

As for Clemson, I like their offense, but it's not particularly close to what OU is doing, nor is it on the same level in terms of success.

LR was singled out, yes b/c he was a really good OC, but b/c Bob wanted to go back to something spread based (ie, the Leach tree). He said that. Publicly. He also said that we had gotten away from some of those principals, and he wanted to go back to that. I don't think he, or LR himself, could have invisioned exactly what OU is running now. Because there wasn't some magic formula. It's simply a case of using the talent we had. Arguably one of the best QB's to ever play the game. A couple of record setting RB's in Perine and Mixon. A TE that is a nightmare matchup. A really good "combination" of WR's, including a couple of absolute speedsters (Westbrook and Brown), and some good possession guys.

But if you think we've invented some new offense, more power to you. Part of what makes LR so good isn't that he is inventing something new, it's just that he has the ability to put his guys in the best positions, especially on a week to week basis against individual opposing defenses. But what we do week to week differently isn't anything magical.

The wishbone was innovative at one time (not invented by OU), but after running it for a decade, we weren't winning with it b/c it was new, or innovative. We were winning with it b/c it was a good offense, and we had superior athletes and most of the time, superior execution.

Same as now. We run a good system, and when we have superior players, we typically have a really, really good offense. Especially at QB.

Again, we do things with alignment, motion, and personnel that nobody else is doing. I never claimed Lincoln invented a new offense, he's taken the best of things a bunch of programs were doing and innovated further. It's a bit odd that you mention Mixon and Perine, because those guys left and the offense got significantly better. The offense probably won't be better than last year's best offense in history, but it will finish #1 in the country for a third consecutive year.

He already had an established program and now the only program doing anything good near the heart of 40 million people, no more than 3 hour drive tops. Plus he can coach.

Agree some but he has less resources than these others and looking at the last 5 years he has been sooooooo good. Sure would love to have him on our sidelines!!

Absolutely agree but they've got the best pipeline out of those other schools. What's crazy to me is that all these guys recruit and play completely different styles than each other.

You're describing how Alabama wins now. We are winning with a combination of really good players and innovative offensive schemes. It's the reason we just had the best offense in college football history.

You keep saying that. We just had the most EFFICIENT offense in college football history, and I believe that is an efficiency stat that is weighted for SOS, which makes it imperfect. Truth be told, everybody healthy, I think I take the 2008 offense over last year's, though it's close.

And you never did address OU having some of the best offenses ever, on three different occasions in the last 20 years. That alone points to it being more than "innovation". People called the 2008 offense the best ever (still highest scoring, or scoring average, I believe).
