Kevin Kruger to UNLV

I guess we can plan our national title parade for next April, since people who somehow know everything that Kevin did behind closed doors have assured us that he was the main thing holding us back.

Congrats to Kevin, I imagine he must be getting a raise and/or promotion in order to leave. Now, all Lon needs to do is hire Coach K, Buzz, Mike Anderson, or Beard as an assistant, and everyone will be happy. :)

lots of ways you could read this, as WichitaSooner stated, likely getting raise and responsibility to make this move now, also could be cherry picking a good situation before his dad retires from OU.

well good for him.

Agree. Kevin obviously has ties to Las Vegas, and this helps in any job change in any profession. I'm sure Kevin wants to be a head coach someday, so a move like this should help. Best wishes for future success to the young man.

Wow!

OU basketball has some awesome momentum right now.

Make it happen! LOL

UNLV happy to have him.

Some of our fans think he is the sole reason we went to the NCAA tourney and didnt win it all.

I doubt that. I would think being the 3rd assistant at OU probably pays more than being the 2nd assistant at UNLV.

I've never bashed Kevin or him being on Lon's staff, but the optics of this IMO suggest more than just a move to better his career. You don't leave your father's staff for what at best is probably a very minor "promotion", and what is more likely a lateral move.

You should. After OU lost Hill and Henson, the on court product has suffered greatly.

Or it could just as easily be said like this:

After OU lost Hield and Cousins, the on court product has suffered greatly.

I could not care less about assistant coaches

Lol! Assistant coaches are the ones who develop players. Bad assistants = bad player development and performance. That's not to mention recruiting.

It’s probably a good move for Kevin if he wants to keep moving up the coaching ladder. Sometimes you have to take one step back in order to move two steps forward. Get out from under Daddy’s shadow.

I wonder is Joe C encouraged this.....??

assistant coach is a pretty broad term - just like chihuahua and mastiff are both dogs. No telling what the tasks will be there plus you always want to bring in diverse viewpoints for experience. This may be more personal/professional than lateral.

Everyone wants to blame someone. We should remember we are dealing with young people where college leads to sudden freedom from a lot of restrictions (many cases, not all) and parental guidance. Some will get into bad stuff that will effect their performance. No matter how good the coaches are some of that will go on.

If Odomes had worked as hard as Buddy and Isaih ( and maybe he did) he probably would have developed a better outside shot. If James had worked that hard he probably would have had better handles and a more consistent outside shot. McNeace probably would have come closer to realizing the high potential many saw for him.

Don't know how hard they worked but they did not improve nearly as much as Buddy and Isaih.

I suspect that the Vegas opening occured and it was an opportunity for Kevin to get out on his own and not have fans assume he had no ability and was just getting by because of who his father was. Being a parent I could understand that Lon Kruger encouraged the move no matter how good he felt Kevin was.

Literally nobody thinks that.

Given how you've spoken about Kevin, I'm guessing you're surprised he isn't taking over UNLV as the HC. After all, he did coach for 2 years at Northern Arizona. Interesting that he couldn't get a better position after a couple years at OU. It's almost as if other schools think he only got a job here because of daddy.
