"Kruger building basketball powerhouse at Oklahoma"

The reality, regardless of what some posters refuse to understand, is JC saved this program FROM Capel and THEN Kruger rebuilt it. Joe would have made a huge mistake giving Capel another season. I thought he should've gotten another year at the time but I can admit I was dead wrong. I don't know why that hasn't become obvious. I don't think Capel was a terrible coach. He's proven to be an excellent assistant and might prove to be a good HC in the right situation. However, he was an awful fit here.

I also find it ridiculous to start putting limits on what Kruger can do here. No program he has taken over had the history and tradition of OU prior to his arrival except UNLV. I believe, in time, we can reach almost any level this program has been in the past with Kruger as the HC. I've respected him since he was at K State and wanted him here when Sampson left. We are further along than I thought we would be at this point and he is recruiting at a higher level than I thought he would at this point. I believe last season is the very least we can expect over the next 5-10 years.

The three coaches that preceded Lon at OU all went to the Elite 8 or further. We may be a football school, and we may not be KU, but we're not a bunch of chumps. If what just happened is the peak of Lon's tenure, then yes, Lon's tenure will have been remarkably average (or worse).

I'm not saying to bring back Capel, so stop making that strawman argument against me. I'm saying that Kruger has done what he always does thus far, and hopefully he doesn't finish like he always finishes. As I said, I things look promising, and I'm betting that Pritchard, Doolittle, and McGusty have a thing or two to say about bucking this trend. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried at all, though.

OK. You're absolutely right, but frankly, that's a pretty obvious point. Kruger is heading into his 5th season. If his next 3 or 4 are losing seasons, he gets fired and the program is right back where it was when he started, then yeah, it's been average or worse. If he goes to 3 straight final fours and wins a title, it will have been remarkably amazing (or better). If he...I don't know...tries to cover up a murder or something, it will have been remarkably awful (or worse).

Further, I fully appreciate OU's great basketball tradition. My only point is the job Kruger has done so far, given what he had to work with when he started, has been better than average.

This article also ran in the Lawton Constipation (my brother's schoolmates at Lawton Ike called it that back in the late 70's). Given that they haven't even bothered to mention the recent football verbal out of Lawton (JC transfer Maurice Chandler out of NEO verballed to OU), this was a pleasant surprise.
