Oklahoma State basketball player Matt Pilgrim apologized Tuesday for a Twitter post Monday in which he made a joking reference to a shooting near campus.
“I would like to apologize if I offended any followers,” Pilgrim posted on his Twitter account. “My comment last night was not well thought through.”
According to police, OSU student Kasey Cook, 20, was shot in the upper leg Monday by a man who had apparently robbed his home at 417 S. Lincoln. The shooter ran north toward campus and OSU locked down residence halls and Greek houses.
“So there (is) a shooter on OSU campus aka Stillwater,” Pilgrim tweeted Monday. “Hate to (say) it, but I can see why LOL.”
Before being removed, the post started an exchange on Twitter, a social networking website that allows users to post messages of 140 characters or less. “If you don’t like (what) I say, stop following me,” Pilgrim posted.
Pilgrim also posted that his heart goes out to anyone who got hurt during the shooting. “Sorry it happened but it happens... to the ones judging, love u too.”
OSU officials became aware of the Twitter post Tuesday and Pilgrim followed his apologetic tweet with a series of others.
--“I was referring to how Stillwater is so boring for some people that it can turn you crazy.”
--“Being from the big city (Cincinnati), I’ve dealt with things I’ve never had to deal with until I came here.”
--“Everyone who came into contact with me knows that I’m a respectful person and don’t mean to hurt anyone.”
--“I wish the best for everyone and hope to see you at the games and graduation.”
It is not yet known if Pilgrim will face disciplinary action.
On Sept. 30, University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops suspended Sooner receiver Jaz Reynolds for “insensitive” tweets posted after a Texas student opened fire on the UT campus and killed himself in the university’s library. Reynolds was suspended indefinitely prior to a game against Texas and returned to the roster two games later.
Pilgrim missed the majority of OSU’s preseason basketball practices because he was suspended by coach Travis Ford for unspecified reasons. Pilgrim rejoined the team midway through last week and did not play in an exhibition finale because he’s not in shape, according to Ford.
Pilgrim was suspended one game last season for a curfew violation. A female OSU student filed for an emergency protective order against Pilgrim and accused him of a sexual assault during the offseason. A Payne County judge dismissed the protective order in September after concluding there was insufficient evidence of rape and scolded both parties for their behavior.
Ford was asked during the Big 12’s basketball media day last month if he follows his players on Twitter. “Nope,” he said. “Unless I need to. Unless I hear about something.”
Then Ford said he is “not big on this Twitter. I have even thought about eliminating it.”
Now Ford has an excuse if he chooses to institute a Twitter ban.
