My top coaching possibilities

Open up the checkbook and bring in Buzz Williams.

I'm going to agree with you and the others who've said "this"...

We need Buzz Williams to breathe some life into our program...

Marshall took Winthrop to the tourney 7 times before moving to WSU and they are tourney bound this season.

He is seasoned, a good coach, very sharp, and would run a clean program.

They're probably going to have to make the finals of the MO Valley tournament.

1.) Tubby Smith (come back to Oklahoma, Tubbs)
2.) Doc Sadler (Kelvin Sampson in the flesh)
3.) Gregg Marshall (Wichita State, gone to the NCAAs 7 out of 12)
4.) Terry Evans (Billy Ball!!!!)

Looking at OU right now...even with our PROUD history of the past 20+ yrs...i dont think there is any way we can get a proven big time talent coach...

I think guys like Marshall and Evans would be possible...but doubt Tubby or Sadler would want to come to this...I would argue that Nebraska is in better position to be a good team in the near future than OU, throwing out all the other factors of the past...

I guess we will see...

Buzz has a great job... no way that happens.

how badly does he want to win and take a team into the upper echelon of college basketball? he could do that at OU. he won't at marquette. it may be a great job, but they'll always be in the middle of the pack of an insane conference. i believe we could get him with the right pitch.

They've been a Final Four in the past 10 yes, as many as OU...so I don't know why he can't do it there...

Just sayin'

Marquette basketball program>OU basketball program...better arena and no football.

it does make a difference. same with blake, but we've made it there without those kind of players.

i guess if he likes finishing behind uconn, syracuse, georgetown, villanova, louisville, pitt, notre dame, etc., cool. OU basketball is a better job. last two years don't change that.

Errrrrrrrr!!!!!! Wrong!!

How am I wrong? I'm not talking 1988, I'm talking 2011.

Marquette has made the NCAA 7 times in the last 9 years. OU has made it 6 times. OU plays in the LNC (12,000), Marquette plays in the Bradley Center (19,000). There are 4 Golden Eagles in the NBA and only 3 Sooners. The Big East is better than the Big 12(10).

My pick:
ChrisMack.jpeg

Chris Mack
23-6 (14-1) - this year
26-9 (14-2) - last year

41 years old and comes from a great coaching tree that includes Thad Matta, Skip Prosser and Sean Miller.

Agreed that Buzz is a pipe dream.

At the same time though, Tubby Smith up there is also an unrealistic option.

I do like your other suggestions though, and would like to add in Mark Fox as well. I think he would be a good (and plausible) candidate.

I want a more experienced guy. I kinda like Terry Evans, but there's a lot unknown about him realistically. Which is basically what we had with Capel and look how that's turned out.

Can understand you demurring Evans' worth as the OU replacement, but there are a few reasons I think he's one coach I wouldn't have a problem with OU hiring.

He's been at UCO for nearly 10 years and has built them into a sustainable power. I don't care what level you are coaching, if you can maintain that type of continuity for that long, that is impressive. So while he doesn't have the Division 1 experience that Capel also lacked, he does have the experience of maintaining a stout program through many seasons, which was something Capel didn't have when hired at OU. Not to mention, succeeding at a lower level in college basketball and doing the same at the Division 1 level is not impossible: Just look at Bo Ryan. Not saying Terry Evans is the next Bo Ryan, but that successful transition has happened before.

Also, he does have experience around a Division 1 program when he was the Director of Basketball Operations during one of the best seasons in OU history in 2002. So perhaps the transition wouldn't be as daunting as one would think. Not to mention, he presumably knows how to evaluate talent and character (something Capel has shown to lack) and is energetic enough to recruit effectively. He knows the area and high school coaches, and you would know you would be getting a coach that loves the university. Furthermore, because he is a popular OU alum, I wouldn't be shocked if this would be a bigger splash with fans than most (if not all) of the coaches that will be vying for this job.

Another thing that needs to be considered is that the list of quality coaches coveting OU's job is going to be much more depleted than usual. Perhaps 5 years ago it would've been absurd to go after this type of coach, but not as much right now.

Should Capel go, Evans isn't my first option, and I doubt Joe C. would take another risk (considering his first risk and only Men's hire backfired). But if Joe C. did go with him, I would support and approve of it.

I think you are overstating the problems. I don't know about someone making a lateral move to OU right now but someone moving up from a mid major should not be tough sell. There are only a couple of guys that wouldn't do it in my opinion.
