In a summary disposition report put together jointly with NCAA investigators, the school conceded that it does qualify under the description of repeat violator - having two major infractions cases within five years in the same sport - but said previous cases show those penalties "are not appropriate in this case.''
"This is an isolated incident involving a single member of the coaching staff, who clearly knew his lack of action to prevent or report the violation was not acceptable,'' the university said.
The heavily-redacted report does not show the player's name, but former center Keith "Tiny'' Gallon has said in interviews that he took $3,000 from a Florida financial adviser to pay for his high school transcripts and allow him to attend college. Taliaferro's phone records link him to the adviser, Jeffrey Hausinger, and Hausinger even offered in an e-mail to allow Taliaferro to stay with him.
In a partially redacted statement provided by Taliaferro for the report, he said he did wrong and calls it a "lapse in judgment'' that he made out of compassion. He describes how the case is similar to how his father was murdered in Detroit when he was 6 years old.
"I know all too well about running into walls and watching my own mother fight to help get me to a better place. It is hard to not have compassion for other's struggles,'' Taliaferro wrote. "Sometimes good people make a poor decision, and that's what happened with everyone involved in this particular matter. That does not excuse anything at all.''
Taliaferro resigned last year when it became clear he'd be implicated in the NCAA investigation.
Again, I agree with your basic premise that every program is dirty, but this is just mind-reading. He doesn't have to plead innocence because he was found innocent.
I really don't see how this report "vindicates" you at all.
I remember getting killed on this board for saying EVERY program and coach is dirty. Not CAPEL!!! Whatever, everyone. Vindication is nice every once in awhile.
Baylor is next. Just like OU going from recruiting JUCO's and good HS players to 4 McD's AA's in 3 years the rise of Baylor is on the back of a lot of shady stuff. I hope they get hammered and soon.
This violation came after Tiny had committed to OU. It was when he was not going to be given a HS diploma from Oak Hill for $3000 worth of books, tuition, etc., so OT got him a loan which his mother paid back.
Also, we recruited BG, TMG, WW, Cam Clark with no violations, so your theory that OU had to cheat to get top notch players holds no water.
OU was recruiting jucos because they were good players and would do the dirty work for Kelvin. We had plenty of quality HS players, too.
Do not compare OU's bball program with Baylor's, please. OU is a known commodity, Baylor has just now started to be successful.
I am glad you feel "vindicated". Kind of like I felt vindicated when talking to my uncle & aunt (huge KU fans) about how big of a mistake it was to fire Mangino, and they assured me he was holding them back. How's that 1 win in the Big12 taste?
LOL, bringing up Mangino.
The comparison was the OU went from recruiting good players to signing a monster class with Damion James before Sampson left which put them on probation. Then Capel comes in and signs a monster class and gets put on probation. The same thing is happening at Baylor.
I understand your comparison, and it makes no sense, because OU gets good players to come play bball here. It is a top-20 program, and we didn't get there by signing a bunch of scrubs every year.
Capel signed BG, WW, TMG, Clark, Fitz with no violations. Tiny didn't pick OU because we paid him, the loan came after he had committed to play for OU.
All of this is your fault TINY!!

I said plead "ignorance" not innocence. It's clear he's not innocent.
Haha. You're arguing with yourself. I never said OU didn't get good players. THey always got good players. And they WERE a Top 20 program. Capel signed those guys with no "known" violations.
As to Capel's involvement the report said:
"There is no finding of the head coach's failure to meet compliance responsibilities pursuant to Bylaw 11.1.2.1. The information obtained through the investigation revealed that Capel promoted an atmosphere of compliance, had no knowledge impermissible benefit and was not aware of Taliaferro's knowledge of the violation until Taliaferro told him about it in late March and early April 2010."
In addition, the report says: "This is an isolated incident involving a single member of the coaching staff, who clearly knew his lack of action to prevent or report the violation was not acceptable. No violations of this nature were the subject of a prior case and there is no lack of control or institutional failure to monitor present."
The two findings of major infractions involved violations of ethical-conduct legislation by Taliaferro, who failed to notify OU officials of the improper benefit and then provided false testimony about his knowledge in his first interview.
In reference to OU's compliance staff the report said: “None of the four pillars of institutional control were compromised by the institution in this case. First, this case did not involve a breakdown of a compliance system. Second, Taliaferro's conduct did not demonstrate any failure to monitor on the part of the institution, create any red flags to warrant action on the part of the institution's athletics administration or reveal that the institution failed to respond to potential violations that occurred.”

Arguing with myself would be a more difficult argument to win.
OU bball isn't KU in football, where once every 50 years you have a few good seasons. OU will be back in bball very soon, because we have the tradition, facilities, and the support. We have a proven winner as our HC, too, and he is already making waves with the recruits across the country.
Bill Self signed those guys with no "known" violations.
(See what I did there?)
Please, the anticapel sentiment around here is crazyEh, Capel knew. So he kept the paper trail clean. He did marry an attorney after all.
I think a lot of folks around here that bashed the NCAA for taking so long look pretty foolish as well. First, OT wasn't talking. Secondly, this is a big deal. Since it is a second offense, we could have been in some serious trouble. Glad they took the time to sort things out, and we came out relatively (so far) unscathed.
I do think OU can sign top players and great classes without cheating. I don't think Kevin's extra calls landed us any of those guys. I really don't. I think he was finally starting to build up connections, and changed his recruiting strategy a bit.
Also, facilities and support? LOL.
Very programs -- very few -- sell out every game. When OU is winning, they have solid support. Not stellar, but solid. It wasn't so long ago that we had the longest home winning streak in the country, so it must not be so bad.
And our facilities are hardly mock-worthy. Our practice facilities are virtually brand new and were state of the art when they were built. There's not a thing wrong with the LNC. It's not the greatest arena in the league, but it's perfectly fine.
What's up lately with previously reasonable posters from other schools suddenly behaving like asses here? Cheno, I would expect this nonsense from, but not you, grace. You don't post here for weeks, but you rush right over here to thump your chest over this virtual non-story? Grow up.
LOL. Grow up? If you were here for the abuse I took at that point from different posters and the PM's I got you would come back and remind some people. Not to mention being told by mod's who I could and couldn't talk to on this board and that if I responded to certain people I'd be banned.
It's actually been more like months since I've posted. This site is full of sunshine pumpers now as opposed to the reasonable posters from the past (most of which are silent on this board).
But I will take your advice and be done with this thread.
