NCAA Tourney the Thread

Is Kelvin 10-0 against Arizona or something? He owns them.

He said in the postgame presser that he has never won at Arizona, so I think he took lots of losses to the Cats when he was at Washington State. But he is undefeated against them in the tourney -- we thumped them in '02!

Kelvin doing unbelievable things at Houston and OU has been on the fringe and basically irrelevant for 6 years.

Man I miss Kelvin.

Kelvin was 0-14 against Arizona when he coached at WSU. He’s 3-0 since then, all in the NCAA Tournament. OU is also 3-0 against Arizona in the Dance - Billy beat them in the Final Four back in 1988.

That game where Alex Spaulding made the critical play to beat them.... great times.

Starting to get the national recognition he deserves.

I miss the consistently of his teams. Game to game. Year to year. You know what you are going to get.

Lose your best two players/scorers from the guard spots in December? No problem. A few tweaks and away they go.

I'm sure Coach Sampson would be touched by all the love he receives on this board now, considering the steady drumbeat of criticism and complaints he was subjected to when he was our coach.

Great coach. He chose to leave for what was then a blue blood. OU didn’t kick him to the curb, so not sure why you feel the need to take a shot at our program while praising him.

no one in the OU administration was sad that he left .... (as OU went on probation)

A little jibe, not a shot.

As one who spent basically Kelvin's entire tenure defending him, I figured I'm entitled. I supported Coach Sampson from start to finish, turning on him only when he left. He created a mess at OU, and blue-blood offer or not, he should have stayed to clean it up. That was the only honorable thing to do. But otherwise, I devoted a great deal of time and energy here and elsewhere to defending him against the slings and arrows of those--and they were legion--who were unwilling to forgive him for the cardinal sin of not being Billy Tubbs.

So yeah, it's ironic to see the nearly universal love he gets here now, It certainly wasn't the case back when he was our coach. Coach Sampson was given a much rougher time of it than Austin Reaves ever was, and you've gotten in your share of digs at the AR doubters. It's not so different.

My comment was directed at abd.

And no one at Houston is sad that he is there.

Kelvin was forced out at OU. OU higher ups thought the NCAA would go easier on us if Kelvin wasn't here. But that "probation?" Had almost no affect on the program. It wasn't even a slap on the wrist. It was a tickle.

My point is this: abd and others constantly talk about missing Kelvin as if OU is to blame for him no longer being here. He left of his own volition for a great job. So why do so many of our posters feel the need to criticize the state of our program while praising Kelvin? Why can’t we just realize that two things can be true: he is a phenomenal coach, but he chose to move on so we shouldn’t constantly pine for him.

Forced out? Yet considers Joe C a close friend to this day. I guess we just got really lucky that we were able to “force” him into one of the best jobs in the country.

You are painting with a very broad brush with that post. Everyone that liked Kelvin doesn't criticize the program since he's gone. Nor do they all blame OU for his leaving. If a school with Indiana's pedigree comes calling, most coaches would be intrigued and probably leave their current job. I still love to watch his teams play and I love the effort he gets from his players but that doesn't mean I pine for him. The only regret is that we had so many fans who didn't recognize what a good coach he was.
