Needed....new football coach!!

it is going to be Brent V

This would be an epic fail IMO and so unsexy. I hated his defenses here (his later years were just brutal) and resurrecting things in the crappy ACC isn't fooling me.

I have full trust and faith in Joe C. and I can't possibly imagine this would energize the fan base or brighten anyone's spirits (not that that's the end-all, be-all, I know).

To me, there are at least a dozen better candidates, and at least two in our own (soon to be ex) conference.

Been on DB for awhile...lol today. Retirement does that.

All those rumors, short talk, DM getting on his ass, etc are there.

My guess...just by the way the games were called (riley's responsibility) he's been mentally out of it for awhile. usc fired their guy sept 11..I think. I'd bet riley's agent has been in negotiations for at least a month. No rule like the nfl.

We've lost 6 recruits already...and the cali kids are some. Supposedly riley had already reached out to Nelson (#2 qb 5* from cali.)

I honestly think he p**sed out of going to the sec. He's about as hot as he can be as far a "the next coach"....

One guy from ut actually pointed out how bad the offensive output was this yr. NO points in the 2nd half of bedlam...really? the play calls were horrible. Brooks was avg 7 yrds but we didn't run him consistently.

I'm definitely ok with him going...just a crappy and chicken (((( way to do it.

OU football going to be just fine. Would not even consider trading places with USC.

My daughter read today that Riley never wanted to make Williams the starting QB after the Texas game but 'people' pressured him to do it and that was a big reason he wanted to leave.

I have no idea if that's true or not but can you imagine anyone pressuring Stoops or Switzer on who to play and him doing it. If that's true, he never had the maturity to be a head coach.

I'm terrible at deciding who I ever want to get hired to coach at OU -- I can always argue for or against (not saying I'm wise, saying I'm wishy-washy).

I will say this: Venables has a great (and well-earned) national rep now, much better than when he was at OU. And his defenses have handled plenty of national powers on the big stage, not just ACC weak sisters.

I think his national rep could serve us well in upgrading our defensive talent, but it's obviously vital, if he gets the job, that he makes a home run hire for offensive coordinator.

I also like that he knows OU and its culture.

On the down side, he's never been a head coach, and he's not especially young (not terribly old either, thankfully). He's also never shown much interest in being a head coach, so if he takes the OU job, I'll assume he's all in and will bring the energy and enthusiasm.

Your points are all VERY valid. I would just be worried as hell on offense, and, like you said, he's never been THE guy. And we can't afford to miss going into the toughest conference in the history of college athletics.

In Joe C. we trust.

I'm not sure it is going to be Venables....even though he wouldn't be a bad choice. If it was Venables, I think they would've announced it today. Intuition tells me they are likely looking at someone who is still coaching....either in a championship game this weekend or trying to get to the playoff. Could be Fickell or Aranda possibly.

Another guy I like is Mark Stoops. He is about to have his second 10-win season at Kentucky in the last four years.....and UK isn't exactly a football school. Plus he has some experience navigating through the murkiness of the SEC. He would be a solid choice IMO.

I just don't see any upside with Mark Stoops. I see a lot of 8-4/9-3 type seasons. I'd rather go for a home run, with the risk of striking out looking. Cristobal, Fickell, Aranda, in that order for me. Obviously Kingsbury would trump them all, but I don't see that happening at all.

I think Mark Stoops would have better players in Norman than he does in Lexington, but that is still no guarantee of 10 win seasons or better. I just like his experience in the SEC. If they do pursue an NFL guy, it needs to be Matt Rhule.....a big HELL NO to Kingsbury.

Rumor that it’s Venables & possibly Lebby as the OC.

Amen. Whoever it is, I hope they keep Murray simply because he is a Sooner and Riley screwed him by bringing him in and then ditching him.

I just heard that Riley wasn't going to talk to the OU players at all, but Stoops made him face them.
I have my doubts about his program-building prowess. He didn't really build OU, it was handed to him in good shape.

Yep. He was also ignoring calls from the players and their families once the story broke.

yesterday was about Riley leaving the past and the "program"

the next presser will be about the future and Brent ..

Joe C wouldn't do anything without talking with the Regents. There is a Regents meeting scheduled for Thursday.

and it was slowly getting worse year after year.

Year 1 - Potential national championship team, lose semi-final in ot
year 2 - down 28-0 in the 1st quarter of semi final, made small comeback but too little too late
year 3 - gets flat out out embarrassed by lsu
year 4 - no playoff
year 5 - no conference championship game

not a great trajectory

And this was supposed to be his most balanced team.
