Hope ND is proud of their t-shirts 'cause they have done nothing else to be proud of tonight.

I sat next to a Notre Dame fan at the game in Norman. He was pleasant enough. However, I was making small talk and asked if he went to school at Notre Dame. No, he is from Ardmore, has lived there his entire life, and went to East Central "for a bit." Fair enough. I asked why he was such a strong Irish fan to buy a seat I assume was much higher than face value in the middle of OU season ticket holders, perhaps some sort familial or geographical ties. He said "I've just always liked them."

As the game wore on I would attempt to discuss strategy/certain players/etc but he clearly had no idea who any Notre Dame players were, but did know their best LB was "from Hawaii." In the end, he was happy that "coach Keller" [sic] was at ND.

I found it very bizarre and wonder if this isn't common theme wherever you go. Certainly having lived in Chicago for 18 years, it seems to be, but at least up there a geographical explanation is available.

That is bizarre, and is NOT common based on my experience with ND fans. There are ND fans everywhere, but most I have crossed paths with follow their team and are reasonably knowledgeable.

There are tons of casual (to say the least) fans up here in the northeast who don't know much about college football in general or about Notre Dame specifically, but they claim to be big fans of the Fighting Irish when the topic comes up.

Up here, it seems to be largely a Catholic thing.

These shirts are the ONLY offense perpetrated by Notre Dame today.

They had a huge bandwagon following back in the early 90's, when they were pretty good. I remember going to school with kids that had no connection to ND, weren't Irish or Catholic, but loved them some Fighting Irish. Never understood that.

I have a niece who is a die hard Sooner fan but has always said ND was her second favorite team for no apparent reason.

Just like there is a generation or two of Braves and Cubs fans because they were always on TV....TBS and WGN, respectively.

It is not like there is a shortageof Catholic schools in the Northeast. I bet half those fools (when it comes to college sports) think Notre Dame has been a power in college football the last two decades.

The Catholic connection seems to apply just Notre Dame, somehow. I've never heard anyone admit a loyalty to, say, Boston College or Villanova because they are Catholic schools.

Stories like this are VERY common for ND. I've have found this around the country.

I'm sure most of this originated with Notre Dame's early football success and the Irish have used that to their advantage. Lou Holtz is now doing commercials 'calling all the Catholics home'!

Seems to me she isn't much of an OU fan if ND is her second favorite team. ND is my least favorite team and I can tell you 9 reasons not to like ND and only 1 reason to tollerate ND.
