Odomes and Doolittle

Doolittle showed he could last year but he tends to defer to Trae, James and Manek to do that. For Odomes sake he just doesn't feel comfortable in that roll, though taking these type of shots without being guarded has to add an element of accuracy when compared to the others who usually have a hand in their respective faces.

Odomes was a very respectable three point shooter in high school. Here are his freshman and sophomore stats:

He averaged right at 50% from three as a senior. I found proof of that last season, but can’t find it now. You’ll just have to take my word for it...or not. He also went 2 of 4 from three in the Faith Seven game that season when he was the Team Texas MVP. As I recall, he finished with 38 points in that game.

It’s not that he can’t shoot from the perimeter. Since he’s good (better actually) at driving to the basket, he essentially became a one trick pony last season. Was that another case of the coaching staff’s failure to expand and develop a player’s game? You be the judge.

In any event, it’s good to see him taking more shots from the perimeter this season. If he can add that element to his offensive arsenal, he will be a lot more effective on the dribble drive.

Doolittle has been playing more inside. Odomes needs to shoot more. He has proven he can knock down wide open 3s, and he should take them every time he gets them. That will open up driving lanes for him and make him a more effective player.

He’s taking more threes this season. Fourteen compared to nine last year (he made seven). :)

Seriously, he’s also taking more mid-range shots. I don’t have the stats to support that claim, I just know he’s shooting with more confidence from the perimeter instead of driving every time he gets the ball.

He’s air-balled 3 free throws this year

I never want to see him shooting

Isiah Cousins was a bad free throw shooter and a phenomenal 3 point shooter. The two skills don't go hand in hand.
