OU in NIT?

OU is 14-13 with 2 games left. Split with Tex and A & M 15-14 entering Big
12 Tourney. If go 1-1 in tourney that leaves a record of 16-15.
Can that get OU into the NIT? And of course the the splits mentioned above have to happen.

It's doubtful, but I wouldn't be shocked if we beat UT. And we match up better with Baylor then we do KU or Mizzou, but again, a long shot.

Hate to be negative, but I still think we will struggle to win any of the remaining 3. Even though we showed slightly more fortitude against OSU, that was because we were playing ahead the entire game, and OSU really does basically stink and were also ice-cold. I still see the same dumb mistakes that will get us killed against good opponents. Now, if Cam Clark stays hot and everyone else is also hitting, I can see us beating ATM. But Baylor and UT, no.

To answer the original poster, 16-15 does not get you in the NIT anymore. Not even close. When the NIT was a private entity they would take big name programs solely for their money making prowess. Since the NCAA took it over, things have changed. If I am not mistaken teams that are left out of the NCAA tournament after win their regular season conference title but then losing in their conf tourneys are given an auto bid to the NIT. This means to get into the NIT as an "at large" you need to have a pretty good resume. Finishing 1 game over .500 won't cut it. For us to have any chance whatsoever we would need to beat A&M, win at Texas or Baylor, and win in the 1st rd of the big 12 tourney. I don't think even that gets it done.

Should OU accept an invitation to the CBI if invited? I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, I'd like to see this team have a few more games to get ready for next year, but at the same time the CBI seems like such a step down. Granted any post-season is better than the last two years. Also, this team's problem isn't playing time together, it's a lack of talented depth, and that doesn't come until next year so I'm not sure how much more games will translate into success next year.

Not unless we go on a tear at end up with 19 wins. We just lost too many games in which we had the lead at halftime and then gave up huge runs to start the second half. Disappointing.

Had we not absolutely blown those games against Cincy & A&M, we would have a good chance at making it into the NIT. It's a real shame.

With this program like it is right now I would take a CBI bid honestly. The last couple years we really haven't even been in the discussion for post season play. We need to keep going in the right direction. Hopefully we get a few more wins and get in the NIT discussion.

I say no. I don't think OU gains much from playing in that tournament. This team doesn't need more experience, or more minutes on the court together. Basically, we just need better perimeter shooting, and a couple of extra games won't do much to help us there. I think the staff would help the program more to have that time freed up to go recruit, for both next year and 2013.

I can't see Castiglione accepting a bid to play in any of those sub-NIT level postseason tournaments. From what I have read of them they are a money losing proposition. You have to pay the tournament organizers for the "privilege" of playing in the tournament. I don't think we're quite that desperate.

As for the NIT, if OU beats aTm, and pulls off an upset against either UT or Baylor, that would put us at 16-14. If OU can get two wins in the conference tournament, it would put us at 18-15. That's probably not going to get us into the NIT, but at least puts us in the conversation. Like BigTime said, OU probably needs to have 19 wins to get serious NIT consideration.

This...just practice and skill development sessions with the coaching staff during the NCAA tournament. CBI offers OU nothing.

This is true to a point, you only have to pay if you host a game. So if you go on the road you don't have a financial commitment to the organizers. In fact, the CBI pays road teams $5,200 per game to help cover expenses. To host a game you must commit to pay the organizers $60k. If 50% of the gate receipts is higher than $60k then you pay the higher amount. So if you assume $10 a ticket, OU would have to sell 6,000 tickets to essentially breakeven.
