Wow, what a transformation the conference has gone through over the past year.
CU jumps to the Pac-10, NU to the Big 10. Two original Big-8 programs are gone, and easily the two worst in basketball recently.
OU and OSU, once fixtures in the top 5 or 6 (top 4 for OU) face a new reality....
KSU, who used to suck, is now a basketball power. They were close to going to a sweet 16 this year and have a coach that will continue to recruit well and win in Manhattan.
Texas A&M was horrendous. But, they build a new arena, hire a guy from UTEP, and they havent looked back since. They bring in talent, they make the NCAA Tournament, and Mark Turgeon has carried on what Billy Gillespie started.
Missouri has never been a better basketball program than OU or OSU, but they build a new arena, hire a fantastic coach from UAB, and it put them on the map. They play a unique style, recruit very well (#1 recruiting class last year), and return an entire team from a young squad that made the NCAA Tournament and only lost one game at home.
ISU hired its most famous player, and after one season they have a very promising future lined up. They secured very good players from Michigan State who were on some final four teams in Chris Allen and Korey Lucious, they got a transfer from Minnesota in Royce White who was a top 50 player out of high school, a transfer from Penn State who averaged 11 ppg for a Big 10 team in Chris Babb, a banger from Southern Illinois in Anthony Booker, plus possibly the best shooter in juco basketball in Tyrus Mcgee. They return Ejim (a very good freshman) and Scott Christopherson (a great shooter). Make no mistake, ISU is extremely experienced and talented for the next couple of years.
Now, today (3/20/2011) Texas Tech hires the same guy who turned around A&M. He is a master recruiter, especially in Texas. He has a great arena, plays a tough style of basketball. They defend, rebound, and beat people up. He plays a pretty similar brand of tough basketball once deployed by Eddie Sutton and Kelvin Sampson.
Look at the coaches in the Big 12:
Bill Self
Rick Barnes
Mark Turgeon
Billy Gillespie
Mike Anderson
Frank Martin
Scott Drew
Travis Ford
Fred Hoiberg
????? (OU)
This conference is loaded with coaches and talent... once dead programs at ISU and Tech are on their way up in a big way. OSU is rebuilding but has 4 very good players coming in (Lebryan Nash, Brian Williams, Michael Cobbins, and Cezar Guerrero) and they could be dangerous as well.
OU needs players, and they need to make a splash with this hire. The right coach here makes sure OU doesnt get left behind.
