OU Picked Sixth in Preseason Coaches Big 12 Poll

I think the teams 2 thru 6 are all pretty close talent wise, at least on paper, and could finish in any order depending on injuries. OSU only 1 vote from unanimous last place, lol.

OU waa hot garbage in clutch time last year. And until proven otherwise, I won't believe they can closeout big games. I will gladly eat crow if proven wrong. But 6th is perfectly fine.

And yet, texas, which finished below us last season, is ranked two spots ahead of us in this poll? Year in and year out, texas gets the benefit of the doubt more than any program I can think of, bluebloods aside. And TCU won just one more game in conference than OU did (after fattening up on a bunch of nobodies during nonconference play).

If you could go back in time and add Trey Young to last year's Sooner squad (not to mention the other new players we have), don't you kind of think he might have made a difference in clutch time?

I was frustrated with last season as anyone, but holding last year's results against this year's squad borders isn't fair (especially when you consider the difficulty of our schedule compared to some of the other teams', including TCU). No one knows how ANY teams in the Big 12 will perform this season, but texas has done nothing to deserve being ranked higher than OU in the preseason.

That said, I'm not going to lose any sleep over preaseason rankings, but I expect us to finish higher than sixth in conference.

preseason means very little, win games and the rest will take care of it's self

I'd rather be picked at the bottom. It's extra motivation. Players eat that stuff up.

11 games (3 DH Big12 teams) against top 25.
NW
Bama
BU (2x)
7 against top 11
usc
wsu
ku (2x)
wv (2x)
unc (probable)

Going to be a really tough season.

Hang on for the ride!

Have to find a way to build confidence through that difficult early season.

I think OU will finish 4th but it's a team with a high ceiling because of Young. I can see OU being a tough out in March.

The early season schedule will be challenging, we'll see if the lessons from last year are learned down the stretch in games this season.

I'm guessing OU could finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th. It's going to be fun watching them develop. They return everyone who played in conference play except at PG..... Woodard was a shell of himself by that time. Adding Trae is a major PG upgrade and all the rest of the players return with a year more of experience.

It will be interesting. There are several good teams in the league without much diffence in the middle.

I never want to see us picked at the bottom. Usually doesn’t turn out well.

Just read that Joel Berry II, who was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player last season, is expected to miss approximately four weeks with a hand injury. If OU is fortunate enough to get by Arkansas in the first round of the PKI, that news might become relevant. He would likely be returning right around that time. Nice that we finally are close enough to the season to have on-court news to focus on!!

I have no problem with the poll results.....will need to prove they can close out games. We have a tough schedule, but hopefully it will pay dividends down the stretch.

Patience is a virtue, but this process reminds me of a post game Q&A I once saw:

Reporter - Coach, when do you think some of the freshmen will be consistent contributors?

Bob Knight - when they're Juniors.
