If you accept the axiom that great defense and hustle, both individually and collectively. will give a team an opportunity to win most games, then when a team doesn't play great defense and with intense hustle, they are effectively saying winning is not very important.
It's only a small step from there, to accept that it may be more comfortable for some to lose than to win. No, I'm not saying anyone is losing games on purpose, per se, just that, crazy as it sounds it is sometimes easier/more comfortable to lose. I'm not so sure we don't have an aspect of that present on our team....as much as I hate to think it.
We're not overwhelmed with individual talent, and the bed these players have had to lay in has not been a lot of fun for them. The season is about over. Maybe it's easier/more comfortable to just lose, at least subconsciously, and look to next season.
