OU- Texas football ticket question

It's pretty well documented that demand for football tickets is way down. The university keeps advertising mysterious "ticket packages" that are available.

A nice trifecta of declining results on the field for a half decade, the state's best source of high paying jobs in the crapper (oil and gas prices), and a conference home schedule that is absolutely awful every other year.

As for the OU-Texas ticket question, Texas is going to have 3 losses going into the game. Excitement around OU football is the lowest it's been since the Blake years. You'll be able to get tickets for below face at the Cotton Bowl on the day of the game. You'll certainly be able to do better than the Ticket websites.

I haven't done this a lot but my experience is you can always get tickets cheaper at an event than on the internet in advance. For example when I went to the NC game in 2000, tickets at the event were way less than the internet and I mean by a hundred dollars or more per seat (I had tickets in advance for that game) Even when I have tickets, I typically inquire as to prices just to determine if this is still true. The down side to this approach is you may get to the event and be unwilling or unable to pay the going rate.

If you decide to purchase at the event make an effort. Start asking early (the farther you are from the venue the more tickets typically cost, but you might run into someone that is just trying to get rid of tickets rather than profit, so ask). Remember at OU-Texas your ticket gets you into the fair. I have no clue what that costs but you should consider the cost before you pay to enter the fair. I would probably pay to enter the fair but ask people that have purchased tickets at the OU v. Texas game what they think. I have never done it at that game. The closer you get to kick off (or the starting time for other events) the lower prices typically go. Obviously supply and demand impacts this greatly.

If I were doing this, I would arrive reasonably early so I had 30 minutes to 1 hour to find tickets. I would ask the entire way to the stadium (or at least the fair grounds entrance) so I got a feel for prices. Then I would get serious. You might even want to head back towards the parking lots because those guys will likely drop prices earlier than the guys closer to the stadium.

The biggest problem I see for you is you want to do this for your Son's B-day, 18th no less. That is a big day for your son and if the prices are really high you could be forced to choose between paying or disappointing your son. Being disappointed for his 18th B-day is probably not too appealing. Also be careful. People sell fake tickets at things like this. By the time you learn they are fake, they will be long gone. (This happens on the internet too, especially if you purchase from an individual rather than a company like Stubhub.)

Finally, the people saying prices will drop if the teams lose games are absolutely correct. I am not sure I agree with those that think OU will have losses but I do agree Texas will. The downside to waiting is if both teams are unexpectedly undefeated, prices will go up. I doubt that will happen. I think it was said already but Texas has to go to ND (first game of the season) and TCU (that is the week before the OU game). Plus they play OSU and Cal at home. They also play Rice but I don't think Rice can beat Texas under any circumstances. Cal probably can't either. Athlons predicts them as fourth in the PAC 12 North. Cal apparently has a good QB returning but not such a strong defense.

Good luck. I hope you and your son have a great day together.

FYI - I think scalping is illegal in Texas (i am not certain) but I have actually never heard of anyone getting in trouble as a buyer or even a seller.

but that is not always true ... it was for the 2000 and 2004 MNCS games ..

however in 03 and in 08 the tickets prices actually went up as kickoff approached ..

600 for a single in nola and 500 for a single in Miami

Since most of those seats are in the south endzone, I have been operating under the assumption that they have a healthy waiting list, but those folks don't want seats in the south endzone.

That is crazy talk. Most OU fans don't expect a championship this year, but I think most are excited about the changes made in the offseason and what appears to be improved recruiting, if even just on paper.

Disagree with this too. Below face value? I haven't seen an OU/ut ticket on the OU side for said under face value ever. Not once. This won't be the first time OU and/or UT have losses going into the game. I don't care if OU loses to Tenn and UT is 0-5, I'm going to the game and I'm prepared to pay at least face value in doing so.

I agree with you. I don't see interest as being way down. I see some unrealistic fans being upset. Most fans understand that nobody wins all the time. Switzer had four seasons with 3 or more losses in a totally different era when it was very difficult for OU to lose 4 games on a season. Fairbanks had three seasons with four losses (one had a tie too). Four of Wilkinson's last five seasons were not particularly good.

I used to be one of those fans. However, after closely following college football I now recognize every team has down years. Since I graduated OU I am pretty sure Nebraska, Michigan, Notre Dame, Washington (very strong back then), CU (strong when I graduated), USC, UCLA, Miami, FSU, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Florida, and virtually all other perennial top programs have bad seasons and most of them have had losing seasons.

Yep.

Our run under Stoops has been amazing, even with last season. It's tough to stay on top as long as we have/did. Look at all the other powers, like you mentioned, and where they've been over the last 10-15 years.

Texas tickets are assigned by donation level first, then by points within that level. If that helps.

333 is absolutely correct. Texas tickets are allocated using the same methodology as used in the purchase and seat assignment of season football tickets. Donation levels are the first factor in determining receipt of tickets and their location. Seat assignment within each donation level is determined by priority points. Each donation level provides and OU-Texas seating priority for those that want to purchase OU-Texas tickets. There are seven donation levels. Hence the highest priority point total in level 7 is assigned seats after the lowest priority point total in level 6 is assign their seat.

Links below explain the process in more detail.
