I gathered from the recent Capel interview and from doing a little digging on my own that this staff has no interest in filling up all the available scholarships or taking guys in order to just have "bodies" for next season. Finding solid big men that fit the bill for a school like OU can be difficult, and to compound the problem, it is late in the game for 2010. This staff doesn't rotate bigs enough to need any more than a solid 4 man rotation. We have also seen that Coach Capel has no qualms with putting a tough wing down in the four spot (Cade Davis and maybe Cam Clark come to mind as guys that could fill that role next year).
If Tiny does stick in the draft, here is what we have back for next year:
Drew Fitzgerald
Barry Honore (heard from a good source that he is going to be with the team)
Kyle Hardrick
Tyler Neal (Just turned 17 and has a brother who is 6-8, so I am hoping he might be a legit 6-7 by the end of the summer).
Now, Fitzgerald is a guy that I think will make a nice leap next year and be a big contributor. Honore is a guy who has already shown that he can play D1 basketball. Hardrick has never impressed me much as a player. He is tentative and undersized/skinny to boot. However, I will at least credit him as being a guy that do some of the little things correctly (plus passer, gets good positioning, can hit the midrange...). Neal seems like he could at least give some kind of meaningful minutes at the 4 with a good summer of putting on muscle.
IMO, this staff now needs to land two post players with one of them being able to play the 5 (I think Drew can play the 5 next year but I fear that none of our other posts can). Washington and Thompson would be nice additions but I am not sure if either can play the 5 (I know Thompson can't).
Bottom line is that this is going to be a big summer for Drew Fitzgerald. We need him to really improve on his quickness and his rebounding. I hope he realizes the opportunity that he has in front of him and takes advantage because we need him to really turn it on for next season.
