Now that the season is almost over let's rank the 6 best big 12 coaches based on this year.
By limiting the ranking to 6 negative comments about any coach are avoided
by focusing on this year we discount performances in the past. total your votes as (1) 10 (2) 7 (3)5 (4) 3 (5) 2 (6) 1. you can include ties if you are unable to decide. For exampl if you can not decide between 4-6 each coach will receive 2

My vote would be (1) Barnes (2) Self (3) Turgeon (4) Sadler (5-6 tie Martin and the Colorado coach

The points are Barnes 10 Self 7 Turgeon 5 Sadler 3 Martin 1.5 the Colorado coach 1.5

I think there are four levels. You can put the individual coaches in the order you want.

Self

Doc
Turgeon
Frank
Barnes
Anderson

Jeff
Ford
Mayor
Boyle

Knight
Drew

Self
Barnes
Martin
Turgeon
Sadler
Anderson
CU's coach (but I am reserving the right to substantially change my opinion)
Drew
Hoiburg
Ford
Capel
Knight

I'm sorry but how in the hell does Hoiberg rank above anyone at this point in his career? What has the guy done other than have a whopping 2 conference wins?

What he has done over the guys I ranked lower is not have had a enough to make a difference and failed to do it. I basically ranked Ford, Capel and Knight lower based on what they haven't done. I think an argument can be made that Ford deserves to be ranked higher than Hoiberg.

So let me get this straight: Hoiberg ranks above coaches that have taken teams to the NCAA tournament multiple times by finishing his one and only season dead last in the conference?

If you are talking about Capel, I ranked Hoiberg higher because he has not posted 3 of the worst seasons in ISU history in a 5 year period. Capel started at much better spot than Hoiberg. I ranked Ford above Capel because he has done a better job. OSU had missed the tournament and was in a bad place when he came to OSU. While Capel's good season was much better than anything Ford has done, his bad seasons (especially the last two) were worse.

I could be wrong about Hoiberg. Perhaps he will be worse than both Capel and Knight.

Capel's 2nd best season (07-08) is also better than what Ford has ever done. Given the pathetic year Ok. State has had this season as well, I think you can go with either one at this point.

And you say Ford was "in a bad place" when he first arrived at Ok. State, but from a personnel standpoint (which is the most crucial component of a program that a coach inherits for his first season), I think you can make the argument that it wasn't any worse than what Capel initially had in '06-07. I see little, if any, difference between Ford's initial core of Obi, Anderson, Eaton, Harris, etc at Ok. State compared to Capel's first core that was Nate Carter, Longar, Neal (who was hurt throughout the season), Crocker, etc. at OU.

It is just an opinion. My opinion is that Jeff Capel has done a very bad job as OU's coach. I think the records support my opinion but it really doesn't matter. Ultimately it doesn't matter becasue I won't have any influence on who coaches OU and don't get to vote in meaningful poll. I have also stated numerous times that I think Capel should get one more year at OU based on the teams performance this year.

I cannot rank Capel's performance this year among the 6 best which is what the question asked, nor can I put Drew there. He seems to alternate between good and bad years.
Despite what the board thinks it is hard to justify SADadler among the top 6 He is near 50% wins with a few upsets and a raft of close games ... a victory at home against Texas and a victory on the road against OU are his best credential.

I wouldn't want Scott Drew to coach my little cousin's fourth grade team. This game tonight in Stillwater proves why he is so awful. His team is not only getting this game taken from them by officiating, but probably any chance at the tournament. He is just standing there watching it happen. At least Capel will stand up and fight for his guys.

Drew is coaching a gem of game tonight in Stillwater.:ez-laugh:

He is truly the worst coach in the conference.

Yeah, OSU really didn't play that well tonight. I have never seen a bubble team play with any less discipline than Baylor did tonight.

Scott Drew might be the worst coach in the conference but as long as he gets the talent he gets I don't see Baylor ever firing him because of how bad they were before Scott Drew.

Pat Knight is pretty bad too. He had probably the most experienced team in the Big 12 this year and they are probably the worst team.

Totally agree. OSU played about a C+ game tonight. The hit a few timely shots in the middle part of the second half, made tons of free throws down the stretch, and watched Drew watch Lace Dunn shoot horrible shot after horrible shot. Easy win for the pokes.

Here's how I think they should be ranked based on what they had and what they did.

1.Turgeon - Who picked A&M to finish 3rd? Athlon had them 8th!
2. Barnes - lost James, Bradley, Pittman and improved to a final four contender
3. Sadler - bubble team, better than expected, with little talent may win 20 games
4. Self - lost Henry, Aldrich and Collins and still won the Big 12
5. Boyle - CU finished about where they should have
6. Anderson - MU finished about where they should have
7. Capel - OU finished about where they should have
8. Hoiburg - good start during non-conference but just ran out of steam with no depth
9. Martin - one of the biggest dissapointments in college basketball until late charge
10Drew - did anybody watch them play tonight!!! What a waste of talent!!
11Ford - a possible bubble team in the preseason may not make the NIT
12Knight - Had 5 seniors and did nothing.

OSU's pretty much a lock for the NIT now that they beat Baylor. They could beat easily beat us.
