Taken from a recent article.....

SN: OU had a transfer since the last time we talked. Have there been any discussions about you getting that scholarship?

Cole: Right now I’m still not supposed to be on scholarship for that first year. That’s not a concern. Going into this situation, I didn’t expect to get one. I’m going to put in the work, and I’ll earn it. I’m not worried.

Is this breaking news? Getting Cole some smart kid aid next season and then an athletic ship for 2013 when thay have several to give was the original deal.

Kruger will probably use the ship that came available with Calvin's demise for a good transfer during the upcoming late signing period. Or mayby even a quality JC. I don't have any idea who. But, I would bet Kruger does.

WHy cant he just keep his academic schollie as a walk-on?

I really don't know what the knock on the kid is. Kruger talked him out of signing with a midmajor and set him up with this deal till he had a ship for him.

He is reported to be 6'7" with a 36" verticle. None of the players we have now can get that high. (Mayby M'baye)

Sure he is a small school guy. But, his numbers are up this year over last, which were good. I see no reason not to trust the judgement of the staff on this one.

I would much rather see OU take a flyer on a local kid like C. J., who happens to be an outstanding student, and by all reports, an even better person. At 6' 7" 220, he's not just any ol' skinny high school kid. The reports I've read seem to suggest that he can play a little, too. Here's an article I found that was published in a January, 2011 issue of the Oklahoman:

The 6-foot-7 Cole averaged 24.0 points, 19.3 rebounds and 4.3 blocked shots in leading Sperry to the championship of the Oologah Tournament over the weekend while earning MVP honors.

For the season, Cole is averaging 23.4 points and 17.9 rebounds in helping Sperry to its best start in school history at 12-0.

Regardless of when C. J. Cole is put on an athletic scholarship, I'm all for signing quality instate kids with potential. I remember the criticism Kelvin received for giving David Godbold a ship. Does anyone disagree that we could use a player like him right now?

When is the last time OU had 13 players on scholarship, and the 13th most talented player was better than Cole? I'd argue not in the last 20 years.

I have no idea how good Cole will or won't be. I do know that he won't be the reason our team doesn't reach certain goals in the upcoming seasons. It's nice to have guys like him on the bench, even if his ceiling as a player is Barry Honore, or somebody like that. That isn't bad out of your 13th scholarship.

I don't have him getting a schollie if he is the last addition of a class and we have one to burn...but why promise a scholarship in the class of 2013 (which he essentially is when it comes to scholarships) when we no commitments thus far?

That's my problem with it.

The only explanation that I can come up with is that the staff really likes the kid.

Is this kid another Tyler Neal? Another 6'7" tweener that can jump. Don't get me wrong, I like Neal and think he'll come into his own and be a good player. But do we need two of the same player?

Actually, it's the perfect time to offer a kid like that. You realize that class has 6 or 7 scholarships available, right?

He isn't a tweener at all. He is a post. A true 4/5 guy. He is quite a bit stronger than Neal. Better rebounder and post scorer.

Is he a good shooter that can stretch the defense or is he going to be an undersized post?

He wont ever be a impact player on the court... But neither has TJ Franklin and he is on a scholly, I know its just been 1-2 yrs, but you need good solid, moral character kids on the roster.
Just think Glue guy for the locker room!

Like somebody mentioned above, I don't anticipate him contributing enough for questions like this to make since. And how is 6'7 240lbs undersized? I would think that would be a fairly decent size 4 in today's game. I read somewhere he has a decent shooting touch, I'd guess out to 15 feet. To me, the kid projects as a 4th or 5th big man. Nothing wrong with that. Gotta have guys like him at the end up the bench that are happy being what they are.

Sorry what I mean by undersized post is that at 6'7" 240lbs is he strictly a back to the basket player. I know a lot o kids that size who play at smaller high schools in OK tend to play the 5. If he has decent touch and can dribble he wouldn't be undersized for the 4, but if his skill set is suited more for the 5 then he would be undersized. It sounds like he is going to be a CJ Washingtion type player.

Am aware, just would rather have some confirmed commitments before we are handing out schollies to the 12th man on the roster.
