Robert Allen thinks Marcus Smart is coming back

I think one game is the perfect sample size to evaluate someone's defensive abilities. Well done.

Also -- Smart didn't cause Angel Rodrigeuz "any problems", huh? So committing 4 of K-State's 9 turnovers and 3 of 16 shooting is "no problems," huh?

Yeah - Smart clearly had a very poor defensive game against Rodriguez.

Brilliant analysis.

Again you're comparing Smart as a true freshman to Tony Allen when he was a junior/senior.

And also again, Smart led the league and was 3rd in the country in steals. Does someone who is "not that quick" generally end up 3rd in the country in steals?

OswhoJeff - Uh, I watched the whole game and YES, not once did Smart cause Angel a problem OR a turnover. Yes he had some but NOT because of Smarty pants guarding him. And yes, I don't analyze games where the opposing point guard sucks, I look at when he is going against quality. And there are other games against quality PG's this year that he had no steals against them and osu got hammered. So go do your own analysis WITHOUT your ugly orange glasses on. Smart, like several other posters on here have said, is not quick enough and doesn't handle well enough, to be a PG in the NBA AND he is too short and doesn't shoot well enough YET to be a 2 guard in the league. He may prove us wrong but right now a team drafting him that high is just taking a risk, IMO

Smart picked his pocket at least once (with around 36.5 seconds left), so you're probably exaggerating a bit.

OsWho fans are not rational when it comes to Marcus Smart.
He's a very good player with lots of heart and intangibles but if this wasn't such a down year in college basketball he wouldn't be receiving near this level of hype. He pulled a disappearing act in several games this year and Releford may be a better pro player in the long run.

I also don't see what position he's going to play in the NBA unless he becomes a much better shooter or a much better ball-handler.

He is a point guard who just won the Tisdale award for the nations best freshman and will be a top 5 draft pick and you chose to describe him as "someone who only gets hype because its a down year, disappears in "several games", doesnt have a position, isnt a good shooter and doesnt handle the ball well."

Yep, its the OSU fans who arent rational when it comes to Marcus Smart.

I think we should ban all the poors(OSU grads) from this board. They bring nothing to the table.

I said he's a very good player, and I said he wouldn't be getting THIS LEVEL OF HYPE. I didn't say he wasn't a good shooter or handle the ball well, just not good enough for the NBA, yet.

Reading comprehension, check into it.

OK Aggie, tell us which one of the above ISN'T true? He HAS dissappeared in several games, doesn't have a position in the league, the stats PROVE he is not a good shooter right now, and has some issues handling the ball - not all the time but against good players, which he will see night in and night out in the NBA, he has dribbling issues. OK, GO!!

Jesus, dude. Get a grip.

Just look at each player's line for the game:

Rodriguez: 3/16 shooting (0/4 from 3pt range), 10 points, 6 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 steal
Smart: 7/11 shooting (1/2 3pt range), 21 points, 6 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals

You're going to look at that and honestly tell me that Smart didn't win that battle? SERIOUSLY?

I'm sure you're going to blather on about Smart had nothing to do with Rodriguez' poor shooting, etc.

LOL.

Yeah... I'm just positive that you and a few other delusional posters on OUHoops.com are right and every college and NBA basketball analyst out there is wrong.

Or his stock could have dropped to the point that he wouldn't have even been drafted.

In terms of draft stock, the bar is significantly higher for upperclassmen. Warren would have had to make huge strides to play his way back into the first round. Considering the train wreck of a program he would've been returning to as a junior, it wasn't an ideal situation for a player trying to improve his draft stock.

Even if he had miraculously played his way back into the lottery as a junior or senior year, he still would have lost millions over those years given that he could've had the same money after his freshman year. QUOTE]

He still would have been making millions and maybe could still be in the NBA if he had waited and got drafted in the lottery.

This pretty much summed up my argument as well, and as far as Smart "disappearing" as you guys put it, name me a player that hasnt ever had a bad game. OK, GO!!!

Or he could have tanked even further and never been drafted. The what ifs can go both ways

If you have never had a bad game you have never played anybody worth a ****

Waiting is what dropped him from the lottery to the second round. A player's draft stock doesn't necessarily improve by staying. It often drops.

As far as Willie getting drafted in the lottery after his junior or senior season, there is a reason I referred to that scenario as miraculous. It simply wasn't going to happen.

every college and NBA basketball analyst out there is wrong.

It must be true that every single NBA and college analyst, without exception, views Smart as God's gift to basketball, or surely the pumpkin posse wouldn't continue to post it here, right? I'm sure they've read every article, every story, every analysis, every broadcast transcript, and they know whereof they speak.

Admins, maybe it's time for a separate board devoted to the King of All He Surveys; he's certainly deserving. After all, it's clear to anyone with eyes to see that he is a combination of Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and Lebron James, only without their weaknesses and shortcomings; he is clearly destined to not only set a standard for basketball greatness that will never be equaled, but also to cure cancer, balance the nation's budget, and bring about world peace.

It's time we stopped denying him his due.

It's especially baffling considering not one of us has said that he's a bad college player. On the contrary we have all said he's a very good player.

Serious question:

Is it completely and totally impossible for you to have a normal conversation on a message board with someone who isn't an OU fan?

Practically every response from you is some sort of straw man/hyperbole-filled nonsense that has absolutely no relevance to the discussion at hand.

I've never said anything approaching the ridiculousness in your post above. I've never claimed that Smart is the "greatest player evah" or whatever other nonsense is dancing around in your head.

I was simply replying to Vinny (whose obsession with Smart borders on the hilarious) and his laughable "analysis" of Smart that is mostly about his other burning obsession: hating OSU.

Smart isn't perfect. But he is a great player who is more than likely going to be a top 5 pick in the NBA draft this year. It is what it is.

Sorry that makes some of you guys squirm like little girls with skinned knees.

Serious question:

Serious answer: No, it's not. Not at all.

But repeated claims that "every" analyst in the country thinks as highly of Smart as the pumpkin posse does draw from me exactly the kind of response they warrant.

I've given Smart his due repeatedly, but I believe his achievements at the college level have been overhyped. He's a very good player, but the press treats him as if he's the second coming, as do the officials, too often. It gets old.

Then to have wade through more Smart hyperbole day after day on this, a Sooner board--not to mention the relentless post-policing from the pumpkin posse.

If an OU fan piped up on the aggie boards every time an oswho fan said something even mildly derogatory about a Sooner player, you'd get sick of it, too (assuming you actually participate on aggie boards -- you seem to be here pretty much 24/7), but you don't have to deal with that, because OU fans are swiftly booted from oswho boards.

You don't see me going after ByronHoustonsSweatyPalms, because he's someone who seems to understand the concept of being a guest on an opponent's board, and he behaves accordingly. He makes his points, states his opinions, is funny sometimes, and even praises the Sooners now and again, but what he doesn't do is talk mindless smack or rush to correct every Sooner fan who questions oswho's greatness even a little bit (or fails to give Smart his proper due as the greatest player of all time).

Hey Poor! Be gone!

Every time you say "hey poor" toward an OSU fan, I wonder how big of a loser you are in real life.

Even if the guy were in fact poor, it really doesn't mean anything. There are plenty of graduates from both OSU and OU who don't make a whole lot of money but have jobs that impact other peoples lives. I.E. nurses, work for non-profits, teach, etc.

Your comment is just plain stupid and a pretty dense attempt to make fun of someone on a message board. At least come up with something clever that even your fellow OU fans can appreciate and laugh at.

As far as Marcus Smart goes - he is a top 5 draft pick this year. He could definitely use a year to improve his shooting and his decision making at times is questionable for a PG but he doesn't have a bad A/TO ratio, just not the best.

He will be a NBA starter though and it will be up to him to improve his game and become a better shooter and just more polished basketball player.

The way Blake Griffin plays now is really not a whole like how he was at OU. He is probably one of the best examples of taking a guy with raw talent and huge upside who has already shown the ability to play smart basketball and make plays...but then take it to a whole different level in the NBA.

Who knows if Smart can do that...but NBA scouts and teams will give him that chance.
