Rutgers Mike Rice. Wow!

Lets hope now that this coach has been fired he also gets sued and loses some serious money to the players he abused. Those kids had one 5 year window to play college sports and he stole it from them with his abusive behavior that clearly appears to be assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Lol at the sueing part

ESPN has reported that the AD is safe. The brass at Rutgers are happy that he landed them a BIG 10 spot. Amazing that he just gave a slap on the wrist to the coach for these actions until the video went public. Shameful that a school like Rutgers can be such a screw up and still be in a MUCH better situation than OU (conference speaking).

I saw quick clips of it this morning on Sportscenter, but yeah, I can see what you mean by it seeming phony and fake. He has to be at least a tiny bit upset though --- he took his suspension, his $75K fine and his anger management course in hopes that this could all be swept under a rug... but now he gets fired anyway in a very public, very shameful way that ensures that he will not be back in coaching a long time.

Seeing his sideline demeanor with players and refs, is it possible that all coaches are that way with players behind closed doors? We've seen our own football coaches go crazy at players during games on the sidelines. While it's not the same (because there's a lot more protection for a football player in shoulderpads and a helmet than a basketball player in nothing but shorts and t-shirt), I hope that sideline demeanor isn't a big red flag that something worse is going on behind closed doors.

That's what unsettles me with this whole situation, particularly the insane amount of moralizing going on in the Twitter-sphere over the past several days. I'm willing to bet that 10-25% of basketball coaches do similar stuff as Rice in practices. I'm not saying it's right, and Rice probably did deserve to be fired, but I think this type of behavior is more common than most people believe.

I also can't believe that the Rutgers AD is now out, and the President might possibly be next. Apparently people aren't allowed to make even one mistake anymore. You're really going to fire an AD who got you out of the Big East and into the B1G just because he made a lapse in judgement concerning the fate of a basketball coach? That's pretty crazy to me...and if the President somehow gets shoved out the door as well, this thing will have officially reached farcical status in my mind.

I get what you're saying and don't doubt for a minute that Rice is not the only coach who used what most would consider unreasonable tactics to motivate his players. But we're not talking about an isolated incident or two that occurred in the heat of the moment. Rice was guilty of an ongoing pattern of abuse, both physical and verbal. He definitely had to go.

I'm not nearly as certain about the AD who lost his job, and Rutgers' president who may be next on the hit list. Both made a decision to give Rice another chance, likely a good faith gesture, and now they're paying the price for it. That's what happens when public perception enters the picture, following the release of a video that had to be embarrassing to Rutger's fans, faculty, and financial supporters alike. Right or wrong, it will send a strong message to university administrators everywhere to make absolutely sure they know what they're doing when they give the appearance of condoning bad behavior.

Rutgers resident tuition and fees: $24,485
Non-resident: $37,805

And scholarships are up for renewal each year, so the student-athletes really can't do much without expecting retaliation. Hell, the assistant that talked to OTL and reported the behavior to the AD had his contract not renewed for insubordination. Riiiiight

Your numbers include room and board. Tuition and fees are like 11-12k less. I'd be shocked if there's a flagship public school that's 20k a year for resident tuition and fees.

all student athletes get room and board though so his numbers are good.

*her* :)

And yeah, that's why I included everything, since scholarships include things other than tuition. Hell, all that Nike gear they wear would cost an average joe thousands, as would travel and hotels at all those away games. So, the cost per athlete per year is even higher.

Got it, makes sense.

My apologies.
