TULSA — Sapulpa coach Darlene Calip did not intend to have her starters play the entire game Saturday. It just worked out that way.
Chelsea Dungee, one of the Chieftains’ five senior starters who played all 32 minutes, scored a game-high 28 points and Brice Calip added 21 as the Class 6A No. 4 Chieftains withstood a late charge from No. 2 Broken Arrow for a 58-51 win Saturday night in the finals of the Jenks/Union Invitational at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.
“You just kind of go with your instinct as a coach,” Calip said of going the distance with her starters. “I wasn’t comfortable with putting some of our young kids in this kind of situation.”
Dungee, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, was 15-for-15 from the free-throw line.
“We looked at their previous games and focused on trying to get the basket and get the and-one,” she said.
Sapulpa (14-1) opened the second half on a 10-2 run to lead 38-24 midway through the third quarter. The Chieftains held the Tigers (13-2) scoreless for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter in holding a 47-33 lead.
Alexis Gaulden, who finished with 11 points, was held to two field goals for the first three quarters. Aysia Evans scored 16 points despite battling foul trouble.
“We wanted to eliminate Alexis and Aysia’s (Evans) touches,” Calip said. “We know they’re a big part of their offense.”
BA showed its best spark of the evening with 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter. Gaulden hit a pair of 3-pointers and Darian Jackson added two baskets as the Chieftains’ lead shrunk to 47-43 with 2:02 left.
Jackson led BA with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
But Brice Calip, who was named to the all-tournament team, countered with a three-point play, then hit two more free throws as Sapulpa made 12 of 14 foul shots in the fourth quarter to ice the win.
Gaulden and Jackson were all-tournament selections for BA.
Dungee and Calip combined for 23 points in the first half as Sapulpa led 28-22 at halftime.
Sapulpa used an 8-0 run in the second quarter, capped by consecutive baskets from Dungee, to open a 26-17 advantage.
“I think we played for about a quarter and two minutes,” BA coach Mike Hughes said. “We were not ourselves. We didn’t give ourselves a chance to get going inside. We didn’t play with a sense of urgency.”
Union 70, Midwest City 59 (boys): The Redskins used a third-quarter run to take the lead for good and knock off the No. 2-ranked and unbeaten Bombers in the boys championship game.
Junior Ethan Chargois led the Redskins (13-4) with 16 points. Adrian Rodriguez added 13 points and Nile Felton and Mo Garcia each had 10.
Richard Anderson scored 17 of his 18 points in the first half as Midwest City (12-1) held a 34-30 halftime lead.
Union began the second half with an 11-0 flurry, capped by a Felton 3-pointer, and never trailed again.
