Who is in charge of making sure he players he recruits have decent character?

I'm not an expert at Duke's recruiting, but just about anyone should be able to recruit to Duke. Only a congenital idiot would think that Duke and OU are on equal footing with regard to recruiting basketball players.

Duke is easier to recruit to than OU. He didn't recruit for a system or to fit the roster.

Maybe Coach K gives him a list of players that he's vetted and says go get someone on this list.

It is one thing to close on one of the top players in the Country for Duke, and a whole other thing to close on one of the top players in the Country for OU.

The exact opposite would be true in football.

If Jeff could have closed on few more of the top players he spent all his time and resources recruiting, he would still be here. He didn't, and didn't have a backup plan. Thus, he would end up with kids that couldn't play for ORU.

I liked Jeff and contrary to some, I liked his Xs and Os. But, his youth, inexperience and overconfidence did him in. I bet the next time he gets a chance, he is a much better and more successful head coach.

At OU, you need to focus on the kids that can compete at the high D1 level but that aren't being recruited by the Kansas and Kentucky's of the world (unless like with Blake, you have an in). Then, once you have a decent roster of players that can compete at this level, you can take a shot at some better kids. This is exactly what Lon has done, and is essentially what Kelvin did. Also, you need to know what you are and what you want to do, and you need to get kids that fit your system. Both Lon and Kelvin did this as well. Kelvin was big on role players. Lon is all about versatility and individual development.

Recruiting at Duke...... That ain't exactly like selling a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves. If you can't convince 2-3 top 50 players every year to come to Duke you have serious problems.

Apples and oranges. Duke recruits good with or with out Capel. I still take Kruger any day over JC.

Exactly! Remember GiGi???

Duke recruiting was "down" a few years ago compared to historical standards, so it's not always that easy.

Agree with cowboy's post above, Capel had trouble running a program, which is more than just recruiting.

Whoa this wasn't meant to compare only to recognize the uptick in recruiting at DUKE which has coincided with JC being back on the staff in Durham. DUKE is my 2nd favorite team to watch so I'm well aware of their long lineage of players in the NBA. To dismiss what he's doing is sour grapes at best.

Whoa. Exactly what is Capel doing? While recruiting is to some degree a team effort, one of the assistant coaches is the primary recruiter on each recruit. Which of the recruits has Capel been the primary recruiter? Until you know the answer to that question, you can't give Capel credit for anything.

Exactly. How do you know he has anything at all to do with it? Some people on this board will do anything to try to make that guy look good....Unreal.

No they aren't.

Besides, I thought Capel was an assistant coach that didn't even get to recruit off campus. Maybe that has changed, or maybe I'm wrong.

According to Jeff Goodman at ESPN, Capel was the lead recruiter on Okafor and Jones (package deal), in addition to Winslow.

I think Capel thought that he had to be too good, too soon. Since we weren't a school that the top players normally considered, I think he took some chances hoping to get the players that could build what Duke and North Carolina have. Unfortunately, if they had been worth the risk, the Dukes of the world would have taken it. They weren't, and they backfired on him.

If he had built more slowly, would he have been given enough time to build it?

I wonder if that will be the group that gets them on probation.

I agree, he tried to build the program too quickly and took a chance on some low character guys.

But at the end of the day, regardless of what school you are recruiting for to beat out Calipari for the #1, #4, #14, and #24 (ESPN rankings) you are doing something right.

Capel was the lead recruiter for Jabari Parker, Mississippi transfer Rodney Hood. http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/11/21/3393804/justise-winslow-commits-to-duke.html
