Selection Sunday with reactions

Want to be a lock for the NCAA Tournament?

Win more than 20 games (did anybody get in with less?).
Don't sit players in the Big 12 Tournament that were healthy enough to play.
Don't lose 6 of your last 8 games, 4 of which were by double digits.
Don't schedule 8 Q4 OOC games in Norman.
Beat one, or two, or three tournament worthy teams away from Norman (did anybody on the bubble not have a neutral/road win against a Tourney team?).
Don't finish tied for 9th/10th in your conference (ridiculous).

I could go on and on.

Don't go 1-10 in your last 11 games against tournament teams. If we go 2-9 we're probably dancing.

You really need to base your non-con around the American, C-USA, Mountain West, MAC, etc. The 7 wins below are essentially empty carbs. They have no nutritional benefit whatsoever. You might as well have not even played. I have no beef with Central Michigan.... but play Air Force instead of MSVSU.... play Oakland instead of Central Arkansas... play Marshall instead of Monmouth... play Rice instead of Texas State.... Play UTEP instead of UT Rio Grand Valley....

Think about that, 7 of the teams 20 wins mean literally nothing. That's 35% of the wins. Playing the worst teams in the country for 35% of your wins, lost 6 of the last 8 games, got bounced in the first round of your conference tournament, went 1-10 in the last 11 games against tournament teams.... and you are wondering why you weren't some kind of shoe-in.

  1. Mississippi Valley State (1-30)
  2. Texas State (17-19)
  3. UTRGV (6-25)
  4. Arkansas Pine Bluff (13-18)
  5. Green Bay (18-14)
  6. Central Arkansas (9-23)
  7. Monmouth (18-16_
I know every team plays teams like this and OU put in some solid teams like Iowa, USC, Arkansas, Providence, etc.... but when you schedule this many games that mean nothing, you really have to shine in your league and OU simply didn't shine.

And again, this isn’t difficult stuff. And if Moser is too dense to crack the code, all you have to do is call Lon or Shep or Bill Self and they can walk you through it.

50% go to bowl games. 25% make the tournament.
Percentages are worse than that.

65% of FBS teams went to a bowl game in 2023. (86 of 133)
19% of D1 teams made the NCAA tournament. (68 of 351)
BUT... only 36 at large bids to the NCAA. Technically, only 6 spots are auto-qualifiers in the CFP bowl system.

So only 10% of teams get chosen for the NCAA tournament vs. 60% chosen in football.

Still no excuse to not make the NCAA tournament, but comparing missing the NCAA tournament to bowl-eligible (.500 record) in football is apples to oranges.

Wichita- you just mentioned a name that nobody talks about or gets enough credit for us making the NCAA in many years- Shep.

Mike Shepherd's ability to put together a quality schedule, and balancing it out with plenty of home games and tough matchups in neutral sites, while still playing a NC road game here or there, was pure wizardry. No doubt his behind-the-scenes work squeezed us into the tourney at least once or twice.

IDK who does that job now, but maybe they should drive up the road to Casady and get a tutorial from Shep.

Michigan St got in with 19-14 record

Maybe, but Virginia/FAU/Colorado/Dayton all played more Q3 and Q4 games than OU. There's no consistency in the selection process, and that's the point.

Tex A&M- 20-14- 9 seed
Mich St- 19-14- 9 seed
Texas- 20-12- 7 seed

And a worse resume overall.
Their noncon puts ours to shame. Played three elite teams, including a neutral court blowout of Baylor, and also played and beat Indiana State. Their NET is so much better than ours, it’s not even a conversation.

Don’t lump in Q3 with Q4, especially the absolute bottom of Q4, which is what Moser filed up on.

100 percent right. I just looked on sports reference at our yearly records and SOS. Despite the strength of our league this year, this season is our lowest overall SOS in several years. It was even slightly higher in the Covid year, where several noncon games were canceled. You’re right, we made the tourney once or twice purely on the strength of our nonconference schedule and results. This year, it is arguably the biggest reason we didn’t make it.
