Sherri on radio

Good stuff so far. Had good things to say about DePaul and how our final minutes of the first half against them in the first round really hurt.

Now talking about Maddie Manning's recovery (gym rat), how Peyton can really score and how we're going to be young next year

She said fans will love Ortiz. She was recruiting Reimer who signed with Notre Dame when she had the opportunity to see Ortiz play and right them decided she HAD to coach that kid.

Williams is a great athlete.

Penzo is very versatile and can play several positions including the 4.

ViVi is rehabing. Sherri would like to redshirt her but knows she can't (I presume because she needs her so bad). Said she will get better and better when she's here.

She is still looking for a big to bring in this fall.

I liked hearing the story of Gabbi's recruiting. Sherri was at an AAU game to see someone else that ended up at Notre Dame and saw Gabbi and immediately wanted to coach her. Apparently was told that she had a 5-school short list and planned to stay close to home... nevermind :)

It was about the same story for recruiting D-Rob, if I recall correctly. Sherri had a big list of guards she was at a tournament to see and was constantly crossing names off the list, but then noticed speedy D-Rob running everywhere and wanted her at OU.

James Hale was much kinder than everyone here (myself included) on how the season went/ended. Sherri herself admitted that they underachieved. She didn't throw seniors under the bus exactly by naming names, but said there was a lack of leadership.

Also said that it was not to Vegas' discredit, but that they planned to have more even point distribution going forward, rather than the scoring burden falling on one player next year.

Also said that they would like to sign "a big" during late signing period.

My feed cut out a bit at the beginning so I hope I didn't miss anything of note. It's done now, probably going to take a bunch of football calls shortly

She also said Maddie should be released on May 5. She is already doing a lot of work but should be completely cleared in May.

ViVi is scheduled to be cleared in October but I'm sure that's a preliminary estimate.

IMO, this was the most glaring problem of the year. We proved we had the talent at times to play with anyone not named UConn or ND. I believe this is also the root of the inconsistency we faced game after game. Sherri knows what the problems are and I think she expected Maddie to be the leader this year (note: Maddie sat next to Sherri during every game this year) and also why she mentioned Gabby has the "it".

Spot on what everyone has said.

When you consider Mo is hanging around to be assistant strength coach, when Sherri talks about lack of leadership this season, you know almost have to acknowledge she's talking about Vegas and Griffin, perhaps Durrett some (for maybe not trying hard enough in practice or something).

I think there was something going on between Vegas and Sherri or the other coaches and players. It's just a hunch. No proof. Vegas has never been a vocal leader so that fits in a bit with what Sherri has been saying. There are a few things that could easily be misconstrued, but I think, perhaps, Vegas was tired of Sherri and the program.

ViVi is scheduled to be cleared in October, as reported. I couldnt tell for certain, but I agree with previous poster who said Sherri's clear intent was that she couldn't afford to redshirt her, even if she didn't see significant floor action until late. I'm betting she won't get any serious floor time until February.

That entire big thing doesn't spell good things for Gibbs and Kellog. I wonder if this is the indication that Kellog may be the possible transfer, especially since Sherri indicated she wants another big in this class.

If Norman is right, Gibbs has to leave because of grades -- or the coaches changed their minds about keeping her around (she wasn't counting against the scholarship limit anyway was she?).

I think, and it's just a gut hunch that the transfer is Kellog or Wyatt -- if there is one. Edwards is a lesser possibility, I think because she's more a Hartman type player who could see valuable time because of that.

Yep, my money is on Kellog and/or Wyatt. I think Wyatt because all she's going to do over the next two years is faller deeper and deeper down the depth chart. I don't think Kellog is going to get much of a chance based on what I've seen with other bigs. Think Jeffcoat, Zander and Cloman.

My impression of Hale's post on his own board was that he wasn't particularly kind at all. I thought he took Sherri to task.

Derica's brother is the student trainer or something. Would they both be leaving? I never have understood the Gibbs situation. Shaya as a disappointment? I thought the biggest disappointment on the team was, well, I won't say.

Penzo as a four at 5-9? Maybe she's grown an inch. I guess if Nina Davis can do it at 5-11.

I don't think that there is any doubt that something was a disappointment. I don't know if anyone knows what, including Sherri. The key to the scoring mentality and the presence of leadership was exhibited several times this year. When we were tied with West Virginia, Texas, Louisville, Iowa State, and DePaul, who stepped up to score the winning points? Who could we count on to make it happen in crunch time? I have seen several comments that Gioya made mistakes that cost us the DePaul (and Louisville) game. But, when you have three firmly entrenched seniors who have scored 1000 points each and a good scorer like Sharane, shouldn't one of them be making that winning play? Why was it Gioya that had to try to do something? Winning teams are defined by having those players who step up when it is time to deliver.

I don't know that you can blame it on anyone. It's like the old song about the rattlesnake biting the girl. "You knew that I was a snake." We are what we are. But, we just didn't have that player who stepped up to win the big game for us. In two of the big games that were close, our star scorer didn't even play. But, how many games this year could have been won by one basket at the right time? When it was crunch time, DePaul came back from five down and hit the three. Why was it that we lost every one of those games?

I like hot sauce, sugar, and a hint of vinegar (although I can't eat the sugar any more). But, I don't know that if I mixed them they would be all that good. Something happened after Jo left that kept the mix from stirring properly. Instead of being the type of team that upset the ACC champions in the Round of 32 (Miami), we lost that type of game. I just don't know what to do with the ingredients that we had. Maybe, it is just time for some new ingredients.

I agree Syb, another 5-10 power forward?? WTH? That just shows how much things aren't going to change. Sherri remains committed to a 4-guard line-up, mostly be choice, partly because she laid a goose egg on recruiting bigs since Abi.

I'm not disappointed in Kellog. In fact, I think, if she had played more, she would been better than Kay-Kay or Durrett. But Sherri sticks with the 4-guard unless fouls force her to change. I agree that Sharane is better than any big we have on the roster, but wouldn't it be nice if we had a real 4 like Leah or Ashley again?

Derica's brother graduated this year as he was recognized during senior day. I hope Derica's not leaving because I think she can be valuable to this team.

I think this team had talent enough to do better than they did in the W-L column but I do believe the intangibles (leadership, confidence, etc) were largely missing this year for whatever reason. I don't think it benefits anyone to blast these student athletes individually on a message board (whether it's football, basketball, softball, rowing, wrestling, etc) so I won't do that but I do think, and hope, next year will be different on the court in spite of the youth that will be present. I think I said at the beginning of the year (or at least I thought it) that this team, top to bottom, one thru fourteen, was maybe the most athletic group we've ever had and I still believe that. Sure, we've had individuals more athletic but as a whole team, I don't think we have. Still that wasn't enough to pull us through. I know no one is more disappointed in the season outcome than Sherri and she will do whatever she can to move the program back up to where it belongs.

If anyone were to beat UConn this year, it would probably be Notre Dame. They go 5-10, 5-11, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 with a couple around 5-10 who are key reserves. The girl who is 6-1, only scores 4.1 ppg, but she also rebounds at a 4.9 clip. Neither says starter to me.

But, they have a 5-10 guard who leads the team in scoring (18.4) and is second in rebounding (6.3). They have a 5-11 guard who is 17.4 and 5.2. Their 6-3 post is 14.5 and 7.5. They all do every aspect of the job: score, rebound, assist It doesn't hurt that a 6-3 Taya Reimer is on the bench, and she led them in blocks. Everyone hustles. Everyone rebounds.

we have sufficient height. What we did not have is sufficient aggression. We started a 6-6 center, a couple of times a 6-2 or 6-3 center. We had a 6-1 forward. Baylor had a 5-11 Freshman who beat them all. Texas didn't kill us with their center. It was that power forward who worked for position, Enempkali. We pretty much held the team with the "best center" in the Big Twelve in check this year (Gardner). The game goes to the player who wants most to play.

Are any good bigs left for the late period? Aja Wilson is the only top 100 player that hasn't signed. She doesn't have OU in her top 5. I would think OU needs to wait until 2015. Unless OU gets a 5th year senior.

He congratulated her on her success this season at the end of the interview, if I recall correctly. Based on recent posts here, I would say that most of us wouldn't congratulate on anything this year, and would probably stop at "thank you for the interview"

Perhaps I've heard Al and Jim too much on Sports Animal, so maybe that's why I thought the interview was nice and tame

I notice that some of the harshness of his post has been edited out. It had been somewhat similar to many of the posts on this board. Now, it reads a bit more positive and supportive.

We survived the year. I think that everyone involved has learned something, or at least placed something in their register for future understanding.

James is at every women's basketball game I've been to, and I have season tickets, and sits in media section off the SW corner of court. I've also seen James go sit and talk to Sherri during halftime of men's games for quite a few minutes. That being said, his number one job, by a mile, is to cover football, number two is men's basketball and number three is probably women's basketball. There's not enough hours in the day to cover all of these 3 sports adequately. So, I think he does the best he can with the time he has and unfortunately, women's basketball is way down the list of importance for his job. I would expect he finds out info from the staff occasionally but also think he must search it from them and they don't seek him out to give info.

I defintley agree with that statement; I thought I was alone on that one. I remeber in one of the post game conferences either Sherri or Morgan were asked about Vegas going into the next game and Sherri responded "if she can't get ready, the rest of us wil be." Then Morgan said something about being in every game and the interview went on.

I believe Wyatt will end up transferring. I remember someone posting about her being homesick. Wouldn't shock me.

Derica will not be transferring, she has wanted to be a Sooner since she was ten years old. The only other school that she had really any interest in and was recruited hard by was Richmond. With this year behind her, she will be a much better prepared player for the Sooners next season.

It is interesting that we have had constant complaints that we had so many unused scholarships when we needed depth. Now, we complain that we wish someone would transfer or lose their scholarship because we don't have enough to recruit a bunch. I hope that everyone stays. If I were a coach, I would be working with Felisha daily. Imagine what she could do if she knew what to do.
