Softball

I'm on record stating my belief that the 2016 freshman class at OU was the best freshman class in the history of not only Oklahoma softball, but ALL of college softball.

But the fact that (1) the freshmen of 2016 will be gone after this season and (2) OU can continue to roll are not mutually exclusive.

My advice to those who worry that we'll see a huge drop-off after Syd, Caleigh, Shay, Fale, et al, are gone? Find yourselves a good hiding place, then sit back and watch. If MW and his UT program overtakes Patty's Sooners as the premier program in the Big 12 in the next 2-3 years, I'll be ready to admit that he's an even better coach than I thought he was.

I don't see MW overtaking Patty by a long shot but I do see him making them far more competitive something they have not been for some time with Connie Clark going 1-14 against the Sooners the last 5 years. I also think it will include some conference championships on a limited basis. JMHO.

Vote Sydney, as many times as you wish. I have been voting a lot this morning, and Barnhill keeps gaining as I vote. Barnhill started at 19.7 and is up to 20.7. Sydney began at 39.6, went up to 39.7, and has fallen to 39.4. She was around fifty yesterday. Vote often.
Voting is currently 36.1 vs 20.2 for Barnhill with nobody else in double digits. After the night that Syd had, she deserves some recognition. We won by two. She drove in three and scored two.

Yes sir. The Baylor Bears (15-19; 2-6) came to play Friday night. The Sooners (33-2; 4-0) needed every run to tally the 7-5 victory, as Baylor hit 3 home runs off our starting pitcher, Giselle "G" Juarez. The big offensive game from Sydney Romero was a key to the win. She also had 3 of OU's 7 hits.

Baylor Starters:

> 1 Sophomore
> 4 Freshmen

The starting pitcher for the Bears, Sidney Holman, is a sophomore. Youthful team.

Saturday (4-6-2019): ESPN Has Softball Scheduled Today

5PM: Alabama @ South Carolina
7PM: Baylor @ Oklahoma

Big Games today:

Louisville 2 Florida State 0, their fourth loss.

Texas Tech 3 Texas 2

Shay hit a HR on her Senior Night, keeping the streak going. I think Caleigh has her night tomorrow, last home game, and every senior has hit a HR on her Senior Night thus far. Tough assignment, Caleigh. Mariah has a good night to shut down Baylor, 8-0 in five.

Even better, Florida State, Alabama, and Texas lost. Tech is still only 3-5 in conference play, having dropped three to OU, the only contender who has played OU. OSU is solidly in second, 7-2. I think Texas is 6-3.

Sunday: Beautiful day for a ballgame in central Oklahoma, with 70 degrees and light winds. First-pitch for the final game vs. Baylor is scheduled for Noon. The game is telecast on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

Texas plays at Texas Tech at 1pm. No TV that I can find.

Noon on ESPN2: #8 Florida hosts #14 Arkansas (coaches poll rankings)

Rankings: https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/softball/d1/usa-today/nfca-coaches

OU 16 Baylor 0 (5)

This was absurd. OU used the reserves after a couple. Skelly hit a 3-run HR. The only outs in the for a while in the third inning were a line-drive double play hit to short by Lyons, hardest hit ball fo the inning. That left a potentially productive inning with a runner on third instead of first and third with nobody out. Oh, well, nevermind: Romero doubled, Aviu singled, and Skelly hit a three-run home run. Scored five after a double play. It was that kind of a day.

Oh, and Caleigh did get her HR on her Senior Day in her first at bat, 2-0. She got a triple off the right field wall her second time up.

In other news, Texas wins today at Texas Tech by a score of 2-0. Miranda Elish threw a 2-hitter and had 9 strike-outs in the Longhorn road victory.

The series went about like one might expect. The whorns with their quality pitching staff allowed only 3 runs in 3 games and scored only 6. Tech was fortunate to win one game.

The conference races are beginning to shape up. The SEC is all LSU, 11-4. Auburn and Alabama are tied in second at 8-4. Then, it is a scramble. This is the same LSU team that lost to Indiana and Stanford in Baton Rouge, and the same Auburn team that lost to Tech in Auburn, AL and to Louisiana Tech and Missouri State in Gulf Shores, AL.

The Big Ten is interesting:

9-0 Michigan beat UCLA and Washington in Fullerton
9-0 Northwestern, lost to OU 7-0 and 8-0 in five.
8-1 Minnesota, beat Texas two of three in Austin.

The Pacific Twelve is all UCLA, Washington, and Arizona with Stanford a distant fourth. UCLA swept Washington in Seattle. The others haven't played each other year. Arizona State was held scoreless in five straight games by Arizona and UCLA. Finally, scored against UCLA.

Don't look now, but VPI is the leader in the ACC. They are 13-2, losing to Georgia Tech and Louisville. Florida State is 9-2, having lost at Louisville and to Notre Dame in Tallahassee. VPI played a very soft non-conference schedule.

OU 6-0, OSU 7-2, Texas 7-3, Tech 3-6 (!), Kansas 2-4 (!).

OU drops to #3 in the RPI. UCLA jumps to #2 while FSU remains at #1. #4 LSU, #5 Washington, #6 Texas, #7 Arizona, #8 Minnesota, #9 Florida and #10 Tennessee round out the top ten. Texas Tech is ranked #16 and OSU #19. #44 ISU, #60 Baylor, and #163 Kansas completes the Big 12.

Personally I think we would rather be on FSU's side of the bracket at the WCWS due to the UCLA pitching so this drop may work for us if UCLA can jump FSU which I suspect will happen due to RPI. UCLA has 6 games against the top 22 and 6 games against the #23-42 teams. FSU has 4 games against the top 47 and 9 games against #80-#137. OU has 6 games against the top 19 and 9 games against #44-#163. I am hoping for #1 UCLA, #2 OU and #3 FSU.

Agree. Seminoles looked very good early in the season, but the Bruins now appear to be much stronger overall (pitching, hitting and defense). Personally, I believe it would be a huge upset if OU lost to FSU in the WCWS.

Florida fans are about to vote Kelly Barnhill 27.4% into the Senior Class Award lead vs Sydney Romero 31.7%. 4 days ago Syd's lead was up close to 15%. Syd needs every vote possible. You can vote as many times as you desire. She needs dozens of votes daily from each of us.

I've voted several times in the past couple of days, in spite of the fact that I hate these types of polls.
