When you have a bench that is so thin that every foul could lead to disaster, the fact that we just finished third in the Big Twelve, the toughest conference according to rpi, becomes incredible. When we get three quick fouls on Sharane, who should have been the sixth man, you wish that you had a Whitney Hand, a Maddie Manning, a Lindsey Cloman, or a Kaylon Williams to bring off the bench until Kornet and Durrett become experienced enough to count on. We were fortunate in that Kornet has been growing up the past few games, and she did a good job of replacing Sharane, especially defensively.
I wasn't very comfortable after last week that we could handle Kansas. But, we did rather strongly. I felt much better about Tech. As Tango and YCN have said, we have performed pretty well against Tech. I think it's a style thing. But, it took a good effort.
The key is that we have been getting that effort from Nicole and Jo. We just need for Vegas to awaken at some point during the game. It helps if we can get some drives from Morgan. But, Griffin has been playing great defense, and Jo has been tough on the boards.
Just take a look at the Big Twelve statistics. Jo is the leader in rebounds at 11.1. Griner and Young come in at 9.7, a bit behind. OU is #3 (Vegas), #17 (Griffin), #19 (Jo), #22 (Sharane), and #24 (Hook) in scoring. That's pretty fair balance. All five starters in the top 24?
Morgan is #4 in assists and #2 in free throw percentage. Jo is #11. Jo (#5) and Nicole (#11) are among the leaders in field goal percentage. Vegas finished #3 in three point percentage and #1 in most three pointers. Nicole was #5 in blocked shots. Morgan was #6 in A/T ratio.
This was a team effort, and everyone was an asset. That is a bunch of pretty fair basketball players.
Should we be surprised that they finished third?
