Sooners predicted to finish 6th in the Big 12

We will finish higher than 6th. We have not finished below 5th with Lon's players.

Fair enough.

I love the potential but I think it may not come to fruition until the following season.

KSU is better than 9th.

Wow, kind of a wakeup call. It's not like it's a bunch of sportwriters, it's the coaches. Not sure where I expected OU to be picked, maybe 4th?

Yeah, I'm not bothered by this, but I won't be surprised if we finish higher. It provides that much more motivation for our guys, in any case.

I don't have any grand expectations for this season, other than making the tournament, but Baylor ahead of OU?

My goal for the season is to be wearing white our first game in Kansas City and our first game in the Dance.

Here's a quote from the article:

OU has finished higher than where they were picked in the Big 12 Preseason Poll in four of the five seasons under head coach Lon Kruger.

Here's the question. Why?

If a team is under-rated year after year, what does it mean? I'm not certain, but some possibilities are:

1. Dumb (or dramatically uninformed) voters.
2. Bias.
3. Jealousy.
4. Better coaching than "the other coaches" think.
5. Better players than the voters think.

Interesting to think about.

But this is certain. If you are unbiased and intelligent, at some point you have to start getting it right.

Note that I'm not saying we will finish at the top. Who knows, perhaps we will, but it doesn't look likely to me. maybe they are just pointing out how valuable a certain player who graduated was, and even with Buddy we did not manage to bring home the crown.

Another interesting thing I noticed. The Kansas coach did not vote for anyone to win the conference. Kind of a vote for himself - even if it is not allowed.

I think 6 is a little low, but we lost a helluva lot from last year. Thus, I expect some growing pains in November/December. Candidly, I would be disappointed if we don't finish at least 5th. If we finish 4th or better, we are solidly in the tournament.

The more I think about this, the more annoyed I am (I took it in stride for a few hours).

texas lost some very key players, too, as did Iowa State. I don't understand either of those teams coming in with that many more votes than we received.

I clicked on this expecting to disagree, but I think it's mostly fair. Baylor is the only one I'd quibble with. I think losing Prince is going to really hurt them. His talent covered up some really serious problems.

Texas could go either way. It just depends on their young, highly touted talent. Unfortunately, I think Shaka will coach them up. The only other one I question a little is ISU. They have some question marks in the post, but it's hard to complain too much since they have one of the better PGs around back this season.

Truth is, 6th in this conference would be a virtual lock for the tournament and nothing to be ashamed of in a rebuilding season.

texas could go either way and if they were 5th to our 6th and a few points ahead of us, I wouldn't squawk. But you'd think they had five returning starters to see the vote totals. But you don't think Coach Kruger will "coach our guys up"?

And yes, ISU has a good returning PG, but so does OU. Again, rank them just ahead of us and I wouldn't care, but I see no reason to rank either of these teams -- and Baylor, too -- that far ahead of us.

I really can't say..I haven't seen other teams..heck I haven't seen OU yet. But just guessing I would think 4th would be pretty darn good of a year.

You can be annoyed all you want, but you've got to remember that the O/U on time spent tabulating this poll and these votes is right around 28 seconds. The hardest part for the coaches would certainly be trying to name all ten of the teams currently in the conference.

I devoted about 90 minutes to being annoyed. That ought to cover it.

meh, most have yet to pivot on UT. they still expect them to tear it up year after year.

5th or 6th is a fair call. I'd pick a defensive statistic as a goal for the season. I'd break that thing down by team and individual and game by game expectations. I've heard a lot about rebounding, but I'd focus on opp fg%. If we really dominated in one of those and played solid at home we could do 4th.

I get why we are picked where we are picked. No team in the conference lost more than we did. The great news is we are much better prepared to replace that kind of production than we were before Lon got here. I too think we will exceed those expectations but it will require a lot of growth by several unproven players.
