He moves a lot better.

Capel not offering him is completely inexplicable.

He does move better. I'm not ready to say he is better yet, but he certainly fits in well with this team, since they want to run.

It's early, but if Ryan continues to perform at this level it really isn't close. Ryan has been the most pleasant surprise so far, IMO.

Who is a more apt comparison for Spangler -- Bookout or Osby?

I'm not saying this just because he's white, but I don't think he's as athletic as Osby.
However, he is probably closer athletically to Osby than Bookout.

I compared him to Bookout due to the local small town hero aspect. Capel not offering is looking terrible.
We all discredited the prediction somebody made that Spangler would average double digit boards. He might do it. His motor is always on.

I would say compared to Bookout as a sophomore and Osby as a sophomore, Spangler is ahead of both. Plays beyond his years.

He needs to improve defense and free throws. He looks good offensively but had some brain farts tonight

It depends on what you are comparing. If I wanted a post up player that I am going to pass the ball into and have them make a basket I want Bookout. Spangler may be overall better, but bookout seemed to have better angles for post up then I have seen spangler have.

Bookout's ability to create space around the rim was what made him so good. He was often smaller than the guys he posted up but managed to make baskets without ever having to dribble. I am starting to see a great finishing ability by Spangler and he is showing a lot of athleticism. I definitely believe he will be better than both by the time he is a senior.

Spanger redshirted...Bookout didn't. So you should compare Bookout as a junior and Spangler now.

Bookout struggled with injuries which really hurt what he could have been.

Spangler is playing at a high level right now but his strengths are rebounding and Bookouts was a huge presence on the defensive side.

Bookout was also a VERY underrated defender. Despite not being tall, or long, he did an excellent job defending in the post using his strength. Nobody score easily on him.

Wasn't a believer in Spangler but he's a lot more athletic then I thought he was.

Long as he doesn't shoot it in our own basket like Bookout did I'm good with him. Jumpshot does make me cringe specially when he throws it up from deep.

Bookout was a lot bigger (mass wise). It's going to be interesting to see how Spangler does against the bigger centers we play. But I will say, #44 for North Texas last night was a monster of a man. If he could finish dunks, he would be a lot better though. lol

It's a complete joke that he wasn't offered a scholarship out of high school.

Good to see you back, Tony!

I agree, a number of posters here were left scratching their collective heads when Capel opted for guys like Nick Thompson and ignored an instate product like Ryan Spangler. I'm just glad Ryan saw through that mistake.

I'm pretty sure Spangler committed early.

What was Spangler rated coming out of HS? What other offers did he have?

Spangler and Bookout both have/had great hands. It pains me to see a big with skillets.
