McNeese State:

Attendance: 8364
Estimated Attendance: 5049

Let's compare to last year's season opener against Northwestern State:

Attendance: 10056
Est. Attendance: 4058

Interesting, more sold last season but more butts in seats this season. Any ideas on this phenomenon?

If anything I would have assumed tickets sold would be higher than last year, based on Sweet 16 and preseason ranking.

Correction. Southeastern Louisiana was the regular season opener last year. Struggling. Here are those attendance numbers:

Attendance: 9626
Est. Attendance: 3052

I'll take an increase of 2,000 folks for the first game of the season. The Wisconsin game will be the big measuring stick for the early season.

I like the 2000 plus increase in the number of butts in seats. That's not bad for a home opener against a team no one expected to pose much of a threat against OU.

It's odd that the number of tickets sold decreased. It would be interesting to know if that is due to a decline in season tickets or in general admission tickets sold?

It probably helped that LNC parking lot was full of RVs for the football game on Sat but any improvement is good.

A couple of thoughts on a subject that is near and dear to my heart:

- I am pleased to see the rise in butts in the seats compared to last year (it's even more pleasing compared to the three years' prior!)

- That was also on the same night as a Thunder home game

- It is also pleasing to see the number of tickets sold has dropped - now before you punch me through the screen - I am HOPING that this means that some of the corporate/linked only to Texas tickets/I only like the Thunder types have not renewed and that we will see gains in butts in the seats come conference season and the premium non con games

- Some of the increase was related to the marked increased in students at the game. Bravo students. You guys looked great last Friday.

- The RV crowd actually in the past has been terrible at coming to games. I have tried to hand out fliers in the past (mind you it was when Blake Griffin was here) and those folks looked at me like I was crazy to ask them to spend $10 and come watch a game

Before any recruits/rival schools scoff at our attendance:

- Only 2 Big 12 schools have the right to scoff - Kansas and Iowa State while the rest of you are just a miserable as the empties at the LNC
- Home attendance in CBB is sadly very down and I am hopeful that the rules changes will help to start to make the games more exciting for the casual fan

Not only were the Thunder at home but there were high school football playoff games going on. Thought the students did a great job. They showed up and were loud the whole game.

This is issue for all collegiate athletics (D1 football attendance has decreased 2 years in a row, in spite of new playoff). In this age of smart phones, tablets, and HD televisions at home, I don't know if anyone knows what the answer is.

Price has to begin to play a role at some point. Hear about about all the revenue and ticket and concessions continue to go up in price at a rapid pace.

I was in Norman for the weekend for both the McNeese State game and the TCU football game. I had season tickets for 5 years in the early/mid 2000s when I lived in the area, but Friday was the first time I was able to attend an OU basketball game in 5 or 6 years (yes, my first time seeing our special senior class!). Here are my takeaways:

-The energy and presence of the student section has grown by leaps and bounds since the last time I was there! I had read about it and seen it on TV of course, but it makes such a difference inside the arena. Keep it up, students!
-Buddy is just so fun to watch.
-I got a ticket in the lower bowl for $10 at the door. The process was very fast and easy. So awesome.
-In the first half, there was some sort of "Kid's Dance Cam" on the jumbotron, showing kids dancing. There was a boy who appeared to be 6-7 years old who danced for a bit before pulling his pants down and mooning the camera, causing the cameraman to immediately cut away. You could hear the crowd laughing for the next couple of minutes. Hilarious.
-I loved the pre-game stuff: Toby's scene-setter, the intro video, the pyrotechnics. I was pumped.
-My one negative: the DJ. I had read a couple of posts here complaining about how the atmosphere has turned more and more into a nightclub, and I agree. I'm pretty young (aka the target demographic for loud, EDM-style music) and I was pretty annoyed pretty quickly. The OU band was great, as always, though.
-If you are lucky enough to have the means to watch/support this team in person, I highly suggest you do so. This is a special season, and they deserve our support!

Overall, it was a blast and I even got to live up to my handle/avatar with a victory swirl on the patio of The Mont :D

Solid report, glad you were able to make a game.
