The Big XVI

Adding these Juco's on steroids does nothing for the big 12 conference. In fact it only makes the Big 12 worse. We are going to replace NU and CU with Memphis, UAB or South Florida? Are you people serious? The real conferences look at several things when considering a school and Basketball isn't one of them. Academics, size matters, football tradition, football revenue and does adding school A increase the TV dollars above and beyond the current cut for each school. The Big 10 added the entire state of Nebraska, every single TV set in the state of Nebraska and every single TV set owned by any person born in Nebraska. The Cornholers travel like no other. Nebraska is considered a top 10 program the last 50 years. This is a huge blow to the big 12 and I predict the end. Lucky for us Boren and Joe C already have the SEC invite in the safe. Without a conference championship game the Big 12 has lost luster. The remaining Big 12 schools will split NU and CU's share and sue for the dollars owed. In 3 years we will all be looking for a a new dance partner. Its over wake up.

This is exactly right. Memphis contributes talent and TV revenue to the SEC. The SEC does not want to add Memphis for the same reason the Big XII doesn't want to add Houston. Now the Big XII adding Memphis is a smart strategic move that adds value and takes a little value from the SEC.

Memphis is a Juco on Steroids its nothing more than a community college. We already have KSU's academic standards we don't need another school that allows a 12 on the ACT or whatever they allow these days dragging us deeper into the mud. OU requires a 26 on the ACT for in state students not in the top of their respective class. South Florida only requires a green card and heart beat to enroll.

TCU had the academic standards but not the football TV sets, traveling fan base, tradition or home crowd size required. Lets see how long this Big East deal lasts. Once TCU starts paying for non-revenue sports to travel East it will get old quick.

lol @ adding every TV set in Nebraska.

buttermaker showed that N in Nebraska stands for Knowledge. ha ha

My first impression after reading ABDs post about Central Florida was "that would be like adding North Texas, no thanks".

But after thinking about it, while they don't bring enough to the table by themselves, what if we went after 6 teams and grabbed the Big 16 trademark?

How about

South Florida, Central Florida, Louisville, West Virginia, Memphis, UAB? Those teams would open up new markets in talent rich areas. Another team from Texas would do nothing for us.

It won't work unless football and basketball are different. OU and Texas are not about to share football revenue with those schools. Why should they?

Why isn't N. Texas better than they are? It's a huge school in TX, so why the crappiness all around?

Because North Texas is a commuter school and a "default" school. Hardly anyone goes there because it was their ideal choice, and it's also where you go to get a degree when you are 30 or 40 years old and realize you might need (or want) to do something else in life and made the unfortunate choice of living in the north-central part of the DFW metro area where that is the best alternative.

Undergraduate wise the programs are probably on par with anywhere else in the Big 12, as it's not the like anyone is in the top 50 outside of UT (barely). The graduate schools are where the prestige and donors come from and NTU would be a step down from Iowa State and KSU. Of course if academic prestige were the deciding factor the Big 12 would have admitted Rice and SMU as both of those are higher rated than UT (or anyone else in the conference).
