The New Beginning Starts When?

Sometime, when you want to learn about quality, about what can be done, research a rather unknown highschool girl's track coach, Beverly Humphrey.

Her teams have won more titles than any other coach in any other sport in Texas. I don't know for certain, but her philosophy of being able to produce a winning track team seemed to focus on the fact that relays counted double the points that individual medals did, and that you may not have a lot of girls who are big enough for weights or fast enough for sprints, but you have a great number of girls who can be taught mid-distance running. Her teams tend to dominate relays. But, they also tend to have about fifteen or more girls who can run 400, 600, or 800 meters among the better times in the state. It takes work to get to where you can run as fast as you can for 800 meters, work more than speed. If you have twenty girls running it every day, you can build relay teams.

But, there is another aspect of her athletes. Male athletes tend to be cocky and break the rules. If you were to ask the people involved, you would find that her athletes are the best students, the best citizens, and the most respected students at her school. They are examples to the community. Any university should want her girls for students, and any employer should want her girls for employees.

I think the team has won 11 state titles.
