SEATTLE - Sure it's just an exhibition. Yet the Huskies have a bit of intrigue entering Saturday's tune-up against Division II Saint Martin's at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.

"We definitely won't see the finished product," coach Lorenzo Romar said Tuesday on the eve of his ninth season leading Washington, "but we're definitely excited about getting out to play."

Romar will be searching for a final starter. Abdul Gaddy will be showing off his summer revitalization, following the heralded guard's up-and-down freshman season. And the Huskies will be unveiling 7-foot sophomore transfer Aziz N'Diaye.

The stout, 260 pounder has wowed the Dawgs in preseason drills with his ability to run and to be more commanding in the lane than anyone Washington has had down low in at least a dozen years.

"He's unbelievable," star guard Isaiah Thomas said of N'Diaye, who arrived this summer from Senegal by way of two years at the College of Southern Idaho.

N'Diaye practiced through a broken nose sustained in preseason drills early last month like it was a 5-9 guard trying to get in his way. He scoffed at the protective mask the team's training staff offered him to wear.

"It's not like he blocks every shot - but he changes shots," Thomas said Tuesday before practice. "It's crazy how good his timing is on shots.

"Aziz is one guy people are going to love."

And yes that is on purpose to represent profanities

Ya, I will be keeping an eye on him and the other two guys OU wanted.

Jawanza Poland started for South Florida and had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block in just 18 minutes in his first action yesterday...

Marquise Carter has yet to play.

PG: Marquise Carter
SG: Jawanza Poland
SG: Steve Pledger
PF: Andrew Fitz
C: Aziz Ndaiye

Dang!

It would have been nice to have all of them, or even two of them, but if we could've just gotten Aziz it would have made such a huge impact on our team. I'm not saying the guy is going to be Shaq or anything but he would have at least given us a legitimate defensive presence in the paint. We have absolutely no one else to do that.

8 points, eh? Appears Poland is Poland, meaning a nice role player. :)

Aziz is the only one of those I would really want.

The one time I saw Carter in person he reminded of a taller version of Omar Leary. Maybe he just had a really bad day (seemed way too passive). Then Poland would be nice but the 2/3 spot doesn't worry me too much with the guys we do have, I think he is about a push with the guys we have. It's not like Poland is a game changer in the backcourt.

Aziz will probably average about 2 ppg this year. I expect him to have a similar impact that Mamadu Ndiaye and Josh Lomers had their freshman years at Baylor.

Just because some of this board had their minds made up that Aziz and Carter or whoever were going to be Sooners, doesn't mean that our program is devistated because they are gone. There have been a lot of guys like that lately that ended up not doing much at other schools that people just forgot about. Some on this board are just using this opportunity to complain while its fresh and then will likely not bring it up once Aziz turns out to be a mediocre backup center with no offensive game and they realize that Poland plays for frickin South Florida.

Here are some other guys that fit the same description that people considered misses. Some of these guys people were in love with when Capel was recruiting them and would probably be complaining about right now if they were putting up this kind of production at OU.

Roger Franklin (OSU) - 2ppg
AJ Walton (Baylor) - 3ppg
Daniel Orton (Kentucky) - 3 ppg (one year career)
Torye Pelham (Southern Miss) - 3 ppg
Dequan Jones (Miami) - 4 ppg (career avg)
Travis Relaford (KU) - 2 ppg
Steve Tchiengang (Vandy) - 3 ppg
Michael Sanchez (Arkansas) - 4 ppg
Andre Clark (Arkansas) - 2 ppg
Donte Smith (USC) - 3 ppg
Gary Clark (Wake) - 3 ppg

not to mention the whole Jai Lucas saga. He really turned out to be a superstar.

Really! I mean really look at those names and remember all the threads about how we HAD TO get those guys. People make these guys out to be stars and complain about the guys we have. But are they really that much better??

I'm not doing this to complain or indict the coaching staff or anything like that. All I'm saying is that Aziz would at least be a defensive presence in the paint that we don't currently have. I'm not saying the guy is going to be an all-American or anything like that.

It's probably worth noting that this article came from Washington's official sports website. They're not going to be anything approaching objective. They're going to pump him up like all official sites do for all players.

hey, if we can overreact to one exhibition game, surely they can have the chance to overreact to preseason drills.

You guys are so right he's obviously going to be a total bum and average 0.3 PPG and 0.2 blocks per game. Let's just act like OU football fans:

"We didn't need eeem anyway"

"We pulled his offer"

Borderline comical...Walton played behind an all-Big XII player and Orton is in the NBA. We would of loved to have those guys, don't kid yourself.

And from the fog emerged a voice of reason.

Just remember this, sports fans, when following the recruiting process:

When OU recruits a guy we have to have him
When OU loses on a recruit he sucks and we didn't need him anyway.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Senior, my post was not to call you out. Just voicing my frustration with some of the things that go on with the board and reminding people how they said some of these guys were must gets when in reality they were nothing special.

But I agree with you that if Aziz turns out to be a good shot blocker and rebounder, he could have helped this current roster.

This is what I was trying to say. You just put it better than I could.

At that juncture, during last March/April, I strongly felt Aziz was a "must get".

Why the fuss? Who cares? We play with what we have, forget pPAYERS WE DON'T HAVE.

Why the fuss dude? It's called "what if thinking", people are smart enough to balance reality with imagining what could have been reality had an alternative history taken place. We will play with what we have, that's not really a choice, that doesn't mean we can't imagine what could have been! It appears Aziz will be a good player, we desperately need good players especially in the post, and we were close to getting Aziz. 1+1+1=3

4 points and 4 rebounds in Washington's first exhibition game. He also committed 5 personal fouls and 2 turnovers in eleven minutes of play. He's a promising prospect, but very raw...
