It's obvious that you can't touch the ball handler; therefore the offensive player has a much bigger advantage driving to the basket.

You always try to keep your player in front of you, but against a good player, you're going to get beat some. It's going to be crucial for the help player to show much earlier and get planted between the driver and the basket. Ditto for the help the helper player. Team dynamics are going to be much more necessary defensively.

Agree that makes sense...good position on help defense will be critical to stopping drives to the basket without fouling.

Sherri says ya gotta do it with your feet

How many of you played defense during practice with your hands behind your back? It looked funny but it sure taught us how important it is to stop penetration with our feet.

The rules do favor the offensive player, but there sure have been a bunch of charging fouls called in our first four games. Some have been called when we were playing defense, but it seems to me the majority have come when we were the ones driving to the basket. Just my opinion, which may or may not be valid.

I do not think the rules have chaged. The NCAA and their officiating commissioners have tolds the refs to start enforcing them. They have been letting too much go uncalled.

You are correct. The "new" rules interpretations were recommended by a panel of leading coaches and administrators that met for several days. The rule interpretations are just part of the changes recommended. Others include changing the dates for the tournament and having the first and second round games at the sites of the top 16 teams.

Our coach was a prominent member of that panel. I wonder if that's why the refs have been so zealously enforcing the new interpretations.

Agreed. I don't know why, but I cringe every time I hear a commentator mention the 'new rules'.

I think the charging rule was actually modified to be when the offensive player starts their upward movement instead of when they leave the floor, so that is kind of a "new" rule.
