Trey Phipps committed

Hope you all don't mind me recycling this thread :) It became official today.

From Eric Bailey...

Trey Phipps is the son of Booker T. Washington Hornets head coach Conley Phipps, who played at Oklahoma in 1985-86 and 1986-87.

Phipps will join an Oklahoma roster that is expected to be largely intact next season. The only loss will be current senior Kristian Doolittle.

“Becoming a Sooner is something I always dreamed about as a kid,” Phipps said. “Being able to have the opportunity to play at OU is something I’m extremely grateful and excited for.”

Sounds like the kid can shoot the ball. For anyone that has seen him play, do you think he is a good enough athlete to compete and defend at the D-1 level.

I remember his dad, a prolific shooter in HS. Thought he might turn out to be a good contributor at OU but didn’t work out. I think he transferred to a smaller school and was very good there but can’t recall where(I am sure someone will recall). Trey obviously can also shoot and looks quick enough to be a different story for the Sooners.

Rotnei Clarke is my best comp at this point. He can shoot the ball at a really high level -- off the catch or off the dribble and at all three levels -- and is deadly pulling up from three in transition. He's a smart, savvy player and a pretty good distributor.

Not sure what he can bring in the way of rebounding, steals, assists, etc. Not top notch athleticism but he seems to play within himself and, even though he doesn't look strong, he doesn't get bumped off his dribble or his shot too often. Knows how to take the contact. Not sure how he will be against big, athletic guards, but his shooting and the fact that he's a legacy means it's worth giving him a shot to see how good he can be.

Conley went to NSU. Was the leading scorer in school history for awhile if I remember correctly!

Conley Phipps transferred to NSU.

Conley Phipps played 2 years at OU before transferring to NSU. He played in 13 games as a freshman and 4 as a sophomore before transferring (he may have left after the first semester of his sophomore year). Averaged 4.6 ppg at OU, but is in the NSU hall of Fame.

Phipps, one of the most prolific scorers in NSU history, totaled 1,009 points in two seasons (1987-88 and 1988-89) to rank 17th on the school's career chart.

The two-time All-Conference player also is No. 1 in free throw percentage in a career (.845); No. 3 in 3-point field goal percentage in a game (.480) and 3-point field goals made in a game (6); No. 5 in scoring average in a season (21.6); and No. 6 in free throws attempted in a game (16).

Posted this on TOS, and this will date me, but I remember playing against Conley in a tournament in high school when I was like a sophomore and he was unreal. Could really shoot and had an incredibly quick release. Gritty player too. Averaged like 34 a game, without a 3 pt line, which was a LOT in those days, considering teams sometimes averaged in the 30s or 40s.

If Trey can play like his dad, in the way offenses are more guard oriented in 2019, we got a kid that can shoot. May not be a starter, but a good shooter and PG off the bench.

Phil Forte from OSU would be my best comparison.

Honest question - how is this kid different than Lazenby, style-wise?

Lazenby wasn’t a pure 3pt shooter. He lived at ft line in juco.

More of a slasher.

He took him for depth only.

So what all skills does he have? Great shooter, but is he a one trick pony? I’ve watched some highlights and the are all just 3 pointers. Can he tomahawk?

Getting a lot better at off the bounce. He’s playing high level kids all year all summer. Defense is better than what you’d think. Don’t assume

Maybe best pure shooter in the nation. 6’1 “it” factor. Gym rat.

There’s more to his game than shooting from three. He may wow you more with his smarts than his athleticism, but he’s not athletically challenged by any means. His MVP performance in the 6A State Championship game where he scored 42 points should tell you something about his ability to score.

This kid is definitely deserving of an OU offer. I would have been hacked if our coaches had not offered!

considering how much kruger loves guards with length, it tells me he sees a pretty good future for trey.

one trey down...
