Two freshman could start?

I was reading an OU summer basketball update over on the OUInsider 247 site and read this about Jelon Hornbeak:

Jelon Hornbeak (6’3) of Arlington (Grace Prep), Texas has been exactly what the coaches thought that he would be. He is very poised and a good leader and a very athletic point guard. He is natural leader and a natural point that is gifted enough to move over and play the ‘2’, but he handles the ball so well that it is hard to move him off the point.

One of the reasons I wasn't sure how much pt Cousins would get at the point. I really thought the staff recruited Hornbeak to be a pg. Gonna be fun to see how it all shakes out.

I think if anything my takeaways from this thread are that (1) after 30 years in the business, CLK knows exactly what he wants in a perimeter player and recognizes it immediately whether the guy is a 5* or a 3*; and (2) two of the things he looks for is length and a polished game.

There are a TON of under recruited combo/point guards that don't jump out of the gym or break ankles, but are between 6'2" and 6'5", are reasonably athletic, can dribble, pass and shoot. Get five of those guys and four reasonably athletic bigs, and you can compete with just about anybody most years. Kelvin did, no reason why CLK can't either.

Not saying any of these guys are going to be THAT good, but Self's best Illinois teams that I think were made up primarily of CLK recruits* is eerily similar with guys with PG skills playing the wings, in fact, Derron Williams was the two guard and is now an elite NBA point.

*I don't know that for sure, just going off recollection.
